  3. How Could This Happen? • Ancient Greeks were in love with philosophy, around which their culture was built • At least 50 identifiable philosophical parties or movements with their own ideas • man’s origin • significance • Destiny • relationship to the gods EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

How Could This Happen? • Corinthians carried much of their philosophical factionalism into the church • Philosophy (“love of wisdom”) with its views invented by man, was all-important • Paul uses stark contrasts to drive home the idea that no man-made philosophy could ever lead us to God EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.” (1 Cor 1:20-21 NIV) know [ginosko] = not just the collection of facts [gnosis] about something, but a deep experiential knowledge reserved for intimate relationships. And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” (1 Cor 1:22-25 NIV) Desire for proof most often is an evasion, or excuse for not believing! “If I prove to you that the New Testament is one of the most reliable pieces of literature in antiquity, will you believe?” The student retorted, “NO!” Josh then responded, “you don’t have a problem with your mind, but with you will.” – Evidence That Demands A Verdict EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” (1 Cor 1:22-25 NIV) • Jews = physical proof “Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” (Matthew 12:38-39 ESV) EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” (1 Cor 1:22-25 NIV) • Greeks = intellectual proof Greeks generally believed that all matter was evil and that anything spiritual was good. It was inconceivable to them that God would take on human flesh like a man. EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” (1 Cor 1:22-25 NIV) calling [kletos], literally means, an “effectual appointment to be a saint”. “And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.” (Acts 13:48 ESV) EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.” (1 Cor 1:22-25 NIV) Ironically and tragically, the very part of God’s plan and work that seems most ridiculous and useless from man’s natural standpoint actually exhibits His greatest power and greatest wisdom. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NIV) EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NIV) There were no shinning stars, or nothing outstanding about any of them/us. Why? He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NIV) God chooses the foolish, weak, and lowly, to cancel out all human effectiveness. ““Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:12 ESV) EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”” (1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NIV) They/we now have become trophies of righteousness, holiness and redemption for God’s glory, pointing solely to Him for what He has accomplished! For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.” (1 Corinthians 2:1-5 NIV) EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians

For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.” (1 Corinthians 2:1-5 NIV) “Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.” (1 Tim 4:13 ESV) “Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared,” (1 Tim 4:1-2 ESV) Testimony [marturion] = “a testimony or witness” - A witness can only testify to what he himself has seen, heard, or experienced. Summary • Do I understand that the preaching of the cross will be considered foolishness and offensive to those who are perishing? • Am I willing to present myself though weak and insignificant to God for His use, no matter what that may be so He is glorified? • Do I understand that it’s not my words, no matter how persuasive, that draw people to faith, but it is the power of God working in their hearts? Understand that though we need to accurately testify of God’s saving power, it is He who works to change the heart! Note however, that God’s calling is effectual, in other words, those who are God’s elect will hear those same words as the power of God! Remember, God is glorified when He takes the glove of human frailty, and fills it with the hand of divine power! EBFC Semon Series: 1 Corinthians
