  4. Why Do Students Misbehave? PersonalChoice Theory NEED For Empathy NEED FOR BELONGING NEED FOR FREEDOM NEED FORATTENTION NEED FOR RELEVANCE NEED FOR FUN AND STIMULATION NEED FOR POWER NEED FOR Competence/Mastery

  5. Punishment • Expresses powerof an authority • Causes pain to the recipient • Essentially negativeand short-term • Designed to control behavior • Closed options for the punished individual • Reinforces a failure identity

  6. Discipline • Procedures that must be learn and accept to function productively • Responsible behaviorin the absence of authority • Promotes control through inner values • Provides a model of quality behavior • Friendlyand supportive • Concerned with actionsin the present

  7. Rules vs Procedures • What to use when……

  8. What’s the difference? • Procedures are expected behaviors that when followed create an orderly environment for learning and social growth. They are used as part of a classroom management plan. • Rules are non-negotiable restrictions placed upon students in order to ensure student safety and ethical boundaries. They are used as part of a discipline plan, within the classroom management plan.

  9. Rules • More than 5 classroom rules is counter productive, use them sparingly. • Rules should be in line with the school-wide discipline plan. • Rules are restrictions placed on students (nonnegotiable.) • Rules should be displayed throughout the year and clearly defined for students, parents and administrators.

  10. Procedures • Procedures are learned behaviors that require practice and consistency. Its “how we get things done.” • Consequence for not following procedures repeatedly is the time it takes from the student to “practice”. • Students are not rewarded for following procedures. • Students are simply redirected in a matter of fact tone when a procedure is broken.

  11. Three Step Approach for TeachingProcedures 1. Explain: State, explain, model, and demonstrate the procedure, give the “why.” 2. Rehearse and practice the procedure under your supervision, reinforce with positive comments. 3. Reteach: rehearse, practice, and reinforce the classroom procedure until it becomes a student habit or routine.

  12. “Remember, if you can prevent the fire, you’ll never use the fire extinguisher!”

  13. Writing Referrals • Referrals are written when serious rules are broken, not for breaking class procedures. • Most referrals are written by 5% of the teachers. • Teachers have the most knowledge about a student not the administration. • You give up your power and control over the situation with a referral, and also over how the principal decides to handle it. • Referrals are written also when student behavior is harmful or dangerous.

  14. Love and Logic Technique • Neutralizing Student Arguing

  15. Discipline with Dignity • P-E-P

  16. Discipline with Dignity • L-A-A-D: Ninety percent effective in diffusing power struggles: • Listening • Acknowledging • Agreeing • Deferring
