DURGA PUJA • In some parts of India this festival is also celebrated as ‘Dugra Puja’. • The nine days and nights of Navratri are dedicated to Mother Goddess. • The celebrations of the festival include fasts, strictly vegetarian diet, japa (chanting mantras in honor of the Goddess Shakti) and recitation of religious hymns, prayer, meditation and sacred texts related to Goddess Durga.

When it is celebrated? • Navratri is celebrated twice a year : • Once in the month of Chaitra (April-May) • Again in the month of Ashwin (September-October). • In the September-October celebrations, the main ritual consists of placing images of the Goddess in homes and temples. • On both the occasions, nine different forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped. • On the tenth day, the idol is immersed in water. Numerous other celebrations are also associated with Navratri festival. GODESS DURGA

  5. DANDIA NIGHT • People celebrate Navratri by dancing a ritual dance known as ‘Dandia’. When the folk dance is performed during the nine nights of Navratri, it symbolizes the worship of Goddess Jagdamba.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FESTIVAL • The festival of Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashmi, is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm. • This festival is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. • Upon vanquishing the demon Ravana, Lord Rama with Sita and younger brother Laxmana, returned victorious to his kingdom of Ayodhya on the day which is called ‘Diwali’. • According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama performed chandi-puja (holy prayer) to invoke the blessings of Godess Durga, for the killing of Ravana.

  10. RANGOLI DECORATION • People decorate their houses and work places with beautiful Rangoli patterns made up of vibrant colours.

  11. FLAMING EFFIGIES • People flame arrows at cracker-filled effigies of ‘Ravana’ along with his brothers ‘Meghnada’ and ‘Kumbhkarna’. • This symbolyses the triumph of truth, and the destruction of evil powers.
