  2. Bruce Lee He is considered one of the most influential martial artists of the 20th century, and an international cultural icon. • He is the founder of the Jeet Kune Do fightingconcept • Lee was born in San Francisco, California to parents from Hong Kong (广东人) Guangdong rén, while in the USA for work and raised in Hong Kong until his late teens • His mother Grace Ho (何愛瑜), a Catholic, was the daughter of a German father and Chinese mother

  3. His father 李海泉 (Lǐ Hǎiquán) was an important Hong Kong Cantonese opera singer and actor • His Cantonese birth name is Lee Jun Fan (Pinyin: Lǐ Zhènfān) (“to return again“) • He came back to America alone as a young man with the age of 18 years with the support of his father and mother • When he arrived, he spoke no English! Very brave… • Lee was married to Linda Lee Cadwell (Linda Emery) from 1964–1973 • He is a symbol of Chinese Pride and a bridge of harmonious cooperation between EAST ( 东 ) & WEST ( 西 ) • Lee was (at the same time) one of the most famous contemporary Chinese, Hong Kongers & Chinese-Americans of the 20th Century, a truly international superstar!

  4. Before Master Lee… • There was no Asian super star in Hollywood on the “silver screen”, he was the first and most critics still agree the BEST! • He changed that! As a result he became very famous and popular in both Asia and the West

  5. Stereotypes in Films.. • 1. Can you think of some of the problems that result from the ethnic stereotyping of different groups by the movie industry? • 2. Why is this so dangerous?

  6. Lee changed everything… • Before the kung fu masters did not share the Chinese Martial arts with foreigners, but Lee gave his lessons to anyone and did not discriminate • Many in the West did not understand and fully value and appreciate the greatness, length and depth of Traditional Chinese Culture

  7. Chinese Gung-Fu: The Philosophical Art of Self Defense is a book by Bruce Lee expressing his martial arts philosophy and viewpoints. It describes his style of gungfu.

  13. The Chinese Martial Arts • Kung fu (功夫) • Wushu (武術)

  14. History of Chinese Martial Arts • Many Chinese martial arts, and several Japanese martial arts, claim to have originated from the teachings of Bodhidharma at the Shaolin Temple (a Buddhist monastery in China) when he visited China in the 6th century A.D. • Researchers regard the claim that all components of Chinese martial arts derive from Bodhidharma with considerable skepticism, since the historical record and modern archaeology report earlier sources for some techniques and schools.

  15. Use of qi in Chinese martial arts • The concept of qì or ch'i (氣), the inner energy or "life force" that flows through the body of every living being, is encountered in almost all styles of Chinese martial arts. Internal styles are reputed to pay more attention to its cultivation than external styles. • Many believe that one's qi energy can be improved and strengthened through the regular practice of various physical and mental exercises known as “qigong”. Though qigong is not a martial art itself, it is often incorporated in Chinese Martial Arts.

  16. What is Qi? • There are many ideas regarding controlling one's qi energy to such an extent that it can be used for healing oneself or others: the goal of medical qigong. • Some styles believe in focusing qi into a single point when attacking and aim at specific areas of the human body (similar to the study of acupressure), to cause maximum damage or disable certain functions of the body.

  17. Some go so far as to think that at an advanced level it is (or was, as some believe such abilities to now be lost, if they ever existed) possible to cause harm without even touching the opponent, a popular yet unproven concept in Chinese martial arts movies!

  18. Discussing the topic(learning log) • 1. Many in the world have heard of the Famous Master Lee, but what new information did you learn from this presentation? • 2. Do you think Bruce Lee would have gone on to become even more famous if he had lived? Why or why not?
