  3. Charm and Beauty reflect QCD Properties of Matter • Initial gluon flux and initial temperature of the gluon-dominated matter • Transition temperature from partons to hadrons • Color degree of freedom of the matter -- definement

  4. Charm quarks c-c may not bind Into J/y in high T QCD medium c Quarkonium Dynamics in Color Medium QCD Color Screening:(T. Matsui and H. Satz, Phys. Lett. B178, 416 (1986)) A color charge in a color medium is screened similar to Debye screening in QED  the melting of J/y. • Recent LQCD calculations  J/y can survive up to a temperature > 1.6 Tc Y’ melts at or near the Tc c Probes for QCD Color Degree of Freedom !

  5. Heavy Quark in QCD Medium • Heavy Quark energy loss in color medium ! -- dead cone effect ? • Charm enhancement from high temperature gluonic matter (Tinit > 500 MeV)! An Intriguing Scenario ?! RAA 1.0 Open Charm Light hadrons PT

  6. Heavy Quark Production Dynamics • Charm and Beauty Production at Tevatron (CDF and D0) and pQCD • Quarkonia production – color singlet/octet • kT Factorization versus co-linear factorization • Heavy quark production and the Color Glass Condensate

  7. J/Y suppression or enhancement ! • Quarkonium suppression: • Color Screening • Partonic dissociation by gluons • Hadronic dissociation by co-movers • At Forward Rapidity and Color Glass Condensate • ? • Quarkonium enhancement: • Large initial charm pair production • Thermal statistical formation of J/y at hadronization or charm quark coalescence

  8. Charm Dynamics in Bulk Partonic Matter Does charm meson/baryon form from multi-parton dynamics? Does Charm Flow? Volcanic low pT – Bulk matter flows Volcanic mediate pT – Spatter (clumps) Thermalization of partonic matter -- charm elliptic flow v2 ! -- charm hadron chemistry ! Constituent quark scaling for charmed baryon/meson ?!

  9. J/Y->e+e- J/Y->m+m- Minv (GeV) 2 Minv (GeV) RHIC Heavy Quark Physics Program PHENIX electron and J/Y measurement! Clear J/Y signal already observed by muon and electron arms in a small subset of Run-4 Au+Au data. PHENIX PRELIMINARY ~ x100 more data in Run-4! See Wei Xie and Gerd Kunde’s talk

  10. RHIC Heavy Quark Physics Program STAR electron from TPC,TOF & EMC -- Tom Cormier direct open charm from TPC -- An Tai STAR Preliminary Charm Beauty RHIC Exp Program from PHENIX and STAR: Au+Au data on charm and beauty ,Charm flow, J/y and Upsilon ! Detector Upgrade: PHENIX -- VTX STAR -- TOF and microVertex Detector (MVD) !
