  1. Types of CAHSEE Essays • Biographical Narrative Essay • A narrative essay tells a story about a real person. • The story is told in order with sequence words. First, second, third, then, after • Explains the importance of the events to the subject of the paper’s life • Uses sensory language- sight, sound, taste, touch, smell • Describes the thoughts and feelings of the subject.

  2. Sample Prompt: • Family stories play an important role in helping us understand our past. Think about a person in your family and a story you’ve heard about them. Write a biographical narrative in which you describe the turning point in your family member’s life. Be sure to explain why it was important for your family member and how it changed that person’s life.

  3. Response to Literature • A literary response essay is when you read a story and then write an essay about it. • Use quotes from the story to show that you understand the story. 1 CD: 2CM • Have an arguable thesis statement that shows you understand the meaning of the story

Sample Prompt: • In the story “ This Side of Paradise,” the narrator provides a long description of Beatrice and her son, Amory, revealing a lot about each of the characters and their relationship. What do you learn about the characters and their relationship? How does the author use setting and characterization to reveal information about them? Write an essay in which you analyze the characters and their relationship.

  5. Response to Literature Essay • Remember to state the author of the story and the title of the story in your intro sentence. Short story titles are in quotes • Also, use quotes from the story to support your thesis.

Expository Essay • Expository essays gives information about a specific topic. • The purpose of an expository essay is to teach or inform the reader about something. • Uses facts, examples and details • Explain the importance of all facts and details used in connection to your thesis argument • 2 CDs ( concrete details): 1 CM ( opinion) per body paragraph

  7. Sample Prompt: • Every time you learn how to play a new game, someone has to explain the rules to you, or you have to observe the game to figure out the rules yourself. Think of a game that you enjoy playing. Write an essay describing the rules of the game to someone who has never played the game before. Make sure you describe each part of the game clearly so that the reader would have no trouble playing the game.

Persuasive Essay • A persuasive essay argues something • A persuasive essay tries to talk the reader into believing something • The thesis statement is an argument that states the writer’s opinion • Prove your argument with facts • Respond to arguments of people who would disagree with your opinion.

  9. Persuasive Prompt: • Bilingual education is a controversial issue in the field of education. Supporters of bilingual education believe that it’s important for children to continue to study their native language while they are learning English. Opponents of bilingual education believe that exposing students to English is the best way to help them quickly learn English. Write an essay stating your opinion about bilingual education.

  10. Business Letter • In the top left corner of your paper put your name, address and contact information ( phone number or email) • Below your address, skip a line and in the left corner list the name of the person you are sending the letter to and his or her address. • Below the person receiving the letter’s address, skip a line and write • Put the date March 13, 2012

  11. Business Letter • Next, underneath the date, skip a line and write To Whom It May Concern: • Next write 5 paragraphs in which you do not indent. • Sign you letter with Sincerely, • Type your name and then write your signature.

  12. Sample Prompt • Write a letter applying for a job you would like to have. You can address it to whomever you please, but make sure you follow the conventions for writing a business letter. It’s important to choose a tone that is appropriate for your audience and to present specific information about yourself and about your interest in the position.

  15. How do I format my essay? • Conclusion Paragraph: • Restate thesis statement • 2-3 sentence summarize how you proved your argument to be true. • Closing sentence- leave the writer with something to think about.
