  1. The samurai were like the knights of Europe. They followed a code of ethics known as Bushido – the way of the warrior.

  2. Bushido • Samurai were supposed to be the following: • Frugal • Incorruptible • Brave • Self-sacrificing • Loyal to their lords • Courageous • Honor • Self –discipline • Self - restraint

  3. Young boys are born to be a samurai.

  4. When a boy turns five, he is given his first sword.

  5. Only about 5% of the people of Japan were Samurai.

  6. Samurai learned to read and write, to fence, wrestle, horseback ride and do archery.

  7. Samurai learned to face hardship and death. They would train themselves by walking barefoot in the snow or working in very high heat.

  8. When a samurai becomes 13-15, he becomes an adult and gets his suit of armor.

  9. He puts his hair back in a topknot.

  10. He wears two swords: one for battle and the other shorter one for committing seppuku, if necessary.
