You should also consider factors such as strong winds, and if the tree can easily be moved from where it falls. Clear the Area Before you take a crack at the tree, clear away any branches, fallen tree limbs or any other small obstacles such as rocks and equipment. This is because you’ll be moving towards and away from the tree, usually keeping eye contact with the tree - tripping could be an issue if there’s a tree falling.

2. Directional Notches This is the more complex part of the job. Making the tree fall in a certain chosen direction needs both your chainsaw and a specific series of cuts you begin the process with, called directional notches. These guide the tree to break off on a specific place and fall in a chosen location. Research online into all the directional notches available or consult a professional tree surgeon, as many situations require different notches or techniques. Rotten Trees If you think the tree is rotten or dead, proceed with extreme caution. It is recommended to request the help of an experienced tree surgeon if you are a beginner. If the tree looks wrongly colored or feels soft or abnormal, it could be rotting on the inside. This means that the tree is very unstable and can be more difficult to make land safely.
