  1. Ophthalmology Examinations are Important Have you ever felt that your eyes are tired at the end of the day? Maybe dry or a little irritation in your eyes which you have put down to eye strain or simply a general symptom of tiredness. This may not be the case at all; maybe you need a checkup with the specialist of Ophthalmologist. Undoubtedly, it would be a good exercise even if it turns out that your eyes are fine. If you wear spectacles it is absolutely important to have your eyes checked by an optometrist once a year. Eyes change and your retinas especially in today's climate. They are subject to all sorts of wear and tear besides aging. The lens becomes less elastic as we get older and therefore an eye test is imperative. There is always some macular degeneration at the back of the eye and so a photograph of this area called digital retinal photography (DRP) shows the eye doctor exactly how good a condition the eye is. Many things affect the eyes including illness, medicines such as antibiotics etc. it is noticeable that after a severe cold or bronchitis where antibiotics are prescribe, our eyes feel tired and or sore. This is usually a temporary phenomenon but can be seen by an optician. It is, therefore, no use going for an eye check-up while the symptoms persist. At least a gap of three (3) weeks should be all owed before you have a prescription for spectacles made. The Ophthalmologist (eye care doctor) is in practice to specifically examine all aspects of the eye whilst the retina specialist would diagnose any disease, including vitreous disease with a detailed eye examination. Another aspect of the eye care doctor or ophthalmologist is to check for cataracts in the eye, basically a clumping of protein which can become larger over time. The older we get more often than not, a clouding of the lens takes place, these are known as cataracts. They can affect the picture presented to the back of the eye and if advanced, will make the picture received by the retina somewhat less sharp. There is a twofold problem with cataracts. Whilst as explained, the cloudier the lens becomes, the less light is received by the retina and therefore we cannot see so well. Also, images become blurry and bright lights such as car headlights when driving at night seem starry and dazzle the eye. Similarly, the sun may seem too bright and in some cases, you may see double vision. This is not a disaster by any means. If the cataracts grow in size and begin to affect your sight to the extent that objects seem to change color, the ophthalmologist (you eye care doctor) will refer you to an ophthalmic surgeon who can remove these cataracts. It is basically a normal procedure and is normally a day in an eye hospital. Remember, you will not be able to drive after the operation and you will be asked to rest for 24 hours after the surgery. The eye care doctor is a very important person in our lives and we should have a checkup once a year. Source: http://healthy-lifes.com/ophthalmology-examinationsare-important/
