  1. Water Line Repair Done Right Having leaky pipes can be very troublesome for any homeowner. The plumbing repair can be costly depending on how bad the damage is. A leaky pipe can destroy the basic structure of the walls or area where the leak is taking place. For buildings and walls a leak can cause water damage that can be difficult to remove depending on the amount of damage. If the leak is taking place outside the home a puddle of water can eventually lead to killing whatever plant is growing near that leak. First and foremost the best time to fix leaky plumbing is to take precautions before they start. Making sure the basic things like the pipes are on tight. Depending on the age of the house or building the pipes may need to be replaced just to avoid any kind of extra damage. If all else fails here are a few tips for dealing with a leaky pipe. Find the Leak The seemingly easiest thing to do is often the hardest. Finding the leak can be time-consuming so start by looking for any holes or cracks where the leak is taking place. The most common indicator of a leak is the fact that you may hear the sound of running water even though water isn’t being used. This is common for waterline damage done to toilets. A person will often hear the sound of the toilet water running despite the fact that the toilet isn’t being used. Usually the size of the hole in the pipes can determine the amount of damage and the size of the leak. This is the first step in determining the damage of the waterline. Mark the Water Leak The next best step is to mark the spot where the damage took place. Marking the spot serves as an indicator of where the damage is coming from. Cover the Seams Once you discover where the leak is coming from the next best choice is to turn off the water valves. After the water valves are turned off the goal is to cover up the place where the leak is taking place. When covering the leak it is recommended that a patch be placed on the damaged area of a leaky pipe. A patch can be anything from simple welding cement, all-purpose weather repair tape, clear sealer, or silicone tape. All the aforementioned products can be found at any supply store at under ten dollars per piece. A patch is a temporary but an effective solution to covering a leaky pipe. This allows the homeowner a little time to decide if hiring a plumber is necessary for the kind of water line damage done. If you feel you can do it yourself, the temporary patch gives you time to get the necessary parts to undertake such an endeavor.

  2. Drain the pipes The next step after covering the seams is to drain the pipes. This means you must open all the faucet covers where the leak may be taking place and let all of the water out. It is recommended that running a water hose from the basement where all the water is most likely to come out through the backyard is sufficient. Replace the Pipes There are many ways to repair a leaky pipe. Some suggestions would include placing a clamp by the damaged area. Another suggestion would be to cut out the damaged part of the pipe, sand it and then replace. But the issue with just repairing the pipe fixtures is that they can leak again. So to avoid any future issues the best course of action would be to replace the pipes altogether. You can measure the pipes that are damaged and purchase replacement parts at your supply store. Once the pipes are in place you tighten them to make sure there are no leaks then test your pipes.
