The TEC On-line Academy • The mission of the TEC Online Academy is to provide students with rigorous, enriching and engaging online learning experience taught by highly qualified instructors. • The Education Cooperative's (TEC) regional virtual school provides online learning experiences that mirror the rigorous high standards and expectations of in-district daily classroom instruction. • TEC Online Academy offers unique and innovative college preparatory, honors and AP courses developed and taught by exemplary teachers from our TEC districts. • To date, over 500 high school students have successfully participated in online courses offered by the TEC Online Academy. We continue to grow and were included in the 2012 Keeping Pace Report, a national survey of innovative K‐12 online and blended learning programs. • [from the TEC website: http://www.tec-coop.org/tec-online-academy]
Teacher Cohorts • In 2009, member districts were each asked to nominate one teacher for training to teach in TEC’s On-line Academy. • Teachers should be facile with technology, have a (potential) course in mind to teach, and be able to manage an extra course on top of their current teaching load. • Training consisted of a Course Design course (online) facilitated by ETLO. • Part of the course was prepping at least six weeks of your 32 week course (or 2 x 16 week courses).
Philosophy / Approach • ETLO emphasized the • Read • Do • Discuss approach. • I used this to organize my courses.
Basic Course Design • I tweaked the Read, Do, Discuss approach to integrate it into the course structure:
Technical Considerations • CMS (Course Management System) • Content Presentation • Student / Parent / School Communication • Assessment • Cheating / Academic Honesty • Philosophy • Goals • Content Collection
Dissatisfactions / Concerns • discussions • retention / learning • updating resources • content delivery
