  2. Words for the week: • Discern • Enmesh • Imperious • Insolence • Paradoxical • Malice • Odious • Palpable

  3. Discern (verb) • Definition: to differentiate between two or more things • Example: Because of the fog, I was barely able to discern the harbor from the bedrock. • Derivatives: discerner, discernible, discernment

  4. Enmesh (verb) • Definition: to entangle • Example: They became enmeshed in an awful argument. • Derivatives: enmeshed, enmeshment

  5. Imperious (adjective) • Definition: extremely overbearing • Example: The imperious behavior of the dictator led to his overthrow. • Derivatives: imperiously, imperiousness

  6. Insolence (noun) • Definition: insulting or contemptuous behavior • Example: His insolence and lack of respect for his mother are shocking. • Derivatives: insolent, insolently, insolentness

  7. Paradoxical (adjective) • Definition: something that appears false or contradictory but is actually correct • Example: It is paradoxical that a man from the South, Lyndon Johnson, led the fight for the passage of a civil rights bill. • Derivatives: paradoxicalness, paradoxality

  8. Malice (noun) • Definition: desire to harm others • Example: His death was caused by malice and was not accidental. • Derivatives: maliceful, malicious, maliciously

  9. Odious (adjective) • Definition: deserving hate or contempt • Example: Iago’s entreaty was an odious act. • Derivatives: odiously, odiousness

  10. Palpable (adjective) • Definition: tangible, perceptible, easily noticeable • Example: I do not see how I overlooked such a palpable miscalculation of people attending the party. • Derivatives: palpability, palpableness
