NEW FROM CONCEPT ENGLISH

  3. Curriculum Maps SIS Steps Teachers go to SIS and review the requirements, the mini-unit, and then go to the first Unit/Collection SIS HAS A LINEAR LAYOUT, BUT THE PLANNING FOR INSTRUCTION IS NOT LINEAR… Teachers read the Curriculum Maps and know the scope and sequence of the 6 Unit year for the grade they teach. SIS Units are Based on the Curriculum Maps

  4. SIS Curriculum Looks Like A color palette Requirements PDF’s of Readings Essential Questions Assessments Strategies

  5. Curriculum Maps Grades 6-12 6 units per year 1st three, plus requirements, and a mini-unit have been uploaded to SIS 4, 5, and 6 released after October 30th

  6. Reading Files Teachers received via email Lists of Readings and PDF’s for Unit 1

  7. Schools purchase an HMH Collections Teacher’s Manual for grade level’s taught by a Teacher. • Teachers organize units and create lesson plans prior to teaching that includes enough information to reflect Concept Schools’ English scope and sequence • Teachers add novels* sparingly, within the body of one of the 6 Units of instruction, and indicate the curriculum they are using • Schools without books provide access for teachers to make copies for class sets of readings/assessments • Units are taught in order, no stand alone units should be accepted Non- Negotiables

  8. HMH Teacher Resources The Dashboard

  9. HMH Resources With Teachers Editions and/or if you have purchased books additional information is provided Contact HMH for your technology resource training

  10. HMH Teacher REsources If you have purchased books you get three free sets of novels

  11. Teacher’s Curriculum Looks Like A composition appropriating the color to show authorship/ownership

  12. based on the PBA task

  13. UnderSTAND SIS Units will be uploaded directly to teacher’s account Teacher’s do not rename unit – only change dates to fit their school calendar

  14. HMH Collections 11th Grade DO NOT TEACH IN ORDER! Books may be too difficult since they are written to grade level May need to start with Close Reader selections

  15. Determine your Fit - Steps

  16. 1. Review the writing assessment. In this case it is write an Informative Essay – Teachers ask themselves, what do I have to teach in order for students to be able to master this assessment? • 2. Read the 2 anchor texts and note the skills and ideas taught. Teachers ask themselves if they understand the essential question/enduring understanding? Read through the additional sources and/or their own readings to find the connections. Select readings to practice skills outlined in anchor texts. Learning Sis Curriculum/parts Steps 1 and 2

  17. Anchor Texts As Edutopia suggests, teachers need a few readings to truly plan

  18. 3. Teacher’s update each unit with their additions/subtractions of readings and other activities for the duration of the unit in the section called Content/Academic Vocabulary. If teacher’s have older books they may match readings to enduring understandings and essential questions. But this is no longer necessary. a. Indicate what readings they will use b. Add academic vocabulary c. Indicate which activities/strategies will be used and attach d. Add additional assessments they will be using e. Novels – If teaching a novel as part of one of the 6 units they must list it under the resource section and attach the unit/lesson plans they are using to teach it. f. Update standards/select corresponding I cans for all standards Learning Sis Curriculum/parts Step 3 Unit adaptation Sufficient information to see what is happening

  19. 4. Lesson plans must appear embedded in Unit 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. We no longer want separate units • 5. Lesson plans must focus on how – creating a picture of what students/teachers are doing, not a list. Learning Sis Curriculum/parts Steps 4 and 5

  20. Adding NOvels A maximum of 3 novels inserted into the 6 units Average novel takes 4 weeks to teach – where are the days? Question to Be Asked: How will the addition of the novel support the scope and sequence outlined in Maps/Units?

  21. Assessment PBA Question: What does this unit need for students to be able to complete this task effectively? Answer: Students must be able to understand the structure of arguments (ethos, logos, pathos) and then explain and provide information in an essay demonstrating this understanding.

  36. SAMPLE LESSON PLANS

  37. Ask for Balanced Literacy – explicit instruction, guided practice, collaborative learning, independent reading and writing in multiple environments • Require teachers to engage students in critical thinking • Strive for Analysis, Analysis, Analysis • Promote the usage of skills not just knowledge of skills • Encourage teachers to start planning by reviewing the Performance Based Assessments that combine skills • Wherever and whenever possible look for students to do Research Format • 10 minute warm up/bell ringer (before), 30-35 minute instruction/activity (during), 5 minute closer/exit slip (after) Concept English Instructional Focus
