  2. Key Problem • Fatigue recognised as a major risk factor for health services around the world • Q-Health identified fatigue as an issue of importance • Agreed to be assessed for Health Practitioners (HPs) as part of new award agreement • No data on potential risk

  3. Key Strategies / Ideas Implemented • 3 month assessment project • Looked at HP services with 24 hr or on-call services • AHP – Physiotherapy and Social Work • 3 other HP disciplines (Pathology, Radiography and Clinical Measurements Scientists) • Defences in Depth (DID) model used • Two tools used to identify level of risk • FAID-Interdyne Roster Analysis • Prior Sleep Wake Model

  4. Timelines & Resources & • Initial project over 3 months • 1.0 FTE Project Officer to oversee • 0.2 FTE Project Officer per discipline for roll out Staff involved (FTE)

Key Outcomes Achieved • Physiotherapy • Roster analysis indicated current rostering practices are sound in Physiotherapy. • PSWM indicated risk mitigation strategies still needed – staff education • Rosters in Social Work presented high risk when >2 consecutive nights on-call • Review rostering • Developed “call-in” checklist, staff education

  6. Lessons Learnt • Validation & legitimising of fatigue as a real workplace issue for the individual, their line manager & and the organisation • Identification & response to fatigue issues belong to each level • Realisation that fatigue is more than a roster-based issue • Rolled out to broader workforce
