  2. The Redemption Years • This is the era that followed • A) Reconstruction • B) Civil War • C) The American Revolution

  3. The Redemptive Era • It was the change in the South to the more conservative Democratic Party. • The early Southern Democrats (later Dixiecrats) exercised their power through such organizations as the KKK and paramilitary organizations such as the White League.

  4. The Redemptive Era • The control of southern states by the Democratic Party in the South not only signaled the end of Reconstruction but also the end of most of the civil rights that African-Americans had gained during that period. This picture illustrates the future of African-Americans in the USA.

The Redemptive Era • Especially during the 1890s Redeemer governments across the South passed Jim Crow laws which segregated blacks in virtually every regard and imposed poll taxes, literacy requirements, and white’s only primaries on the black populace. These were intended to prevent them from voting.
