  2. Uxbridge Coursework Objectives: • To understand why we need to collect data and what a hypothesis is • To understand how to collect data • To know the route that we are taking when collecting data

  3. So why do we need to collect data?

  4. Hypothesis • H1: Certain Distinct land use zones exist in Uxbridge • H2: Building Height increases towards the town centre in Uxbridge • H3: Building age increases towards the town centre • H4: Vehicle and pedestrian numbers will increase towards the town centre

Choosing Groups • Teamwork is an important skill that you learn in Geography • It is important that you choose a group carefully to collect data as group data collection is easier. • The write up though MUST be on your own and a reflection of your work • Choose a group of no more than 4 people per group

  7. Collecting the Data • Constructing a Data Capture Form is important because:

  8. Data Collection Sheet Number Transects 1-50

  9. Land Use • Key Categories: • Residential (R) • Open Space/Park (OP) • Industrial (I) • Offices (OF) • Shops (S) • Transport (T) • Leisure/Recreation (L) • Other (OTH)

  10. Building Height • Key Categories: • 1 storey • 2 storey • 3 storey etc… • Simply insert the height of the building in the correct column. If there is no building, just enter a ‘0’.

Building Age • Before you go on the field trip, you need to print off housing styles and types from the internet for the following categories: • 1:Pre 1900 (A) • 2:1900-1939 (B) • 3:1940-1970 (C) • 4:1970+(D) • Try internet websites, estate agents and ‘google’ for London/Uxbridge housing types of that era

Vehicle and Pedestrian Count • At every 3rd stop, time for one minute the number of vehicles and pedestrians which pass you in BOTH directions. • In your groups of 4 you will need one person counting aspect in one direction. • Make sure you time 1 min carefully with a stopwatch • Once totalling, insert the correct figure in the correct box on your data collection sheet.

EquipmentCheck • Clipboard/Data Collection Sheets and Key • Pen/Pencil • Appropriate Clothing (check weather forecast the night before the trip – plastic wallet if it rains) • Digital Camera may be useful/Mobile phone with downloadable picture capacity • Trainers (Comfortable shoes) • Stopwatch
