  2. Billington Translation • Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow slave in the Lord, will make know to you everything concerning me, • Whom I have sent to you for this reason – that he may know about you and encourage your hearts,

  3. Billington Translation • with Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make know to you all things here.

  4. Tychicus: an example of service to the Gospel • Tychicus • Fellow slave (Col 1:7) • Faithful minister • Delivered letter to Ephesus (Eph 6:21-22) • With Paul in Acts (20:4) • “Timothy; and the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus” • Probably carrying contributions to the Jerusalem church

Tychicus: an example of service to the Gospel • With Paul Later (2 Timothy 4:12; Titus 3:12) • Beloved brother • Apparently paid Paul a visit in Rome, was on his way home, and was delivering letters • Provides stability and encouragement • Our service • Rom 12:6 “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them”

Onesimus: an example of submission to the Gospel • Onesimus had been a runaway slave • Not a very good slave (Philemon 11) • Probably stole (18-19) • Onesimus became a Christian (10, 16) • Onesimus went back (to Colossae!) • Could be branded or “collared” • Paul now sees him as profitable • Paul asks Philemon to forgive and show brotherly love (19)

Onesimus: an example of submission to the Gospel • Our submission • James 4:7 “Submit yourselves to God.” • Romans 6:22 “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.” • Matt 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
