Antennae- covered with small pits used for smelling - allow butterfly to locate food by scent c. Proboscis-[mouth] coiled tube that elongates to obtain water and nutrients Head Thorax Abdomen

Wings – contain scales full of pigment, provide color • -scales “dust” that easily detaches to escape predators • - used to determine sex: • femaleshave two spots • males have one spot male forewing hindwing female • b. Legs – [claw-like] enable butterfly to cling to • perch • - contain hair-like structures, used for • tasting

  5. Abdomen: consists of 10 segments, houses • most organs of circulatory, • respiratory, reproductive system • a. Spiracles- tiny holes located on side of • abdomen used for exchanging oxygen • and carbon dioxide [6-7 pairs] • b. Heart- muscular tube extends length of • abdomen dorsally, pumps blood toward • head • *open circulatory system- all internal organs • bathed in blood • *Females abdomen larger to house eggs
