  1. The HSC Faculty and Staff Recognition Program A program to recognize faculty and staff for their outstanding accomplishments at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center Prepared by a Committee of the Faculty Advisory Council Bill Wonderlin, Biochemistry (SOM) Scott Davis, Physical Therapy (SOM) Stan Hileman, Physiology and Pharmacology (SOM)

  2. Faculty Awards General Awards • Teaching: The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding teaching by HSC faculty. • Research: The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding research by HSC faculty. • Community Service: The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding community service by HSC faculty.

  3. General Awards (continued) • Clinical practice: The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding clinical practice (patient-centered care) provided by an HSC faculty member or a multidisciplinary clinical team consisting of two or more HSC faculty. Awardees must demonstrate outstanding patient outcomes over a period of no fewer than 2 years.   • Mentoring Award: The purpose of this award is to recognize faculty who have provided outstanding mentoring to students or their faculty colleagues. • HSC Innovators Award: The purpose of this award is to recognize faculty or staff who have moved the HSC into a new direction in teaching, research or service.

  4. Special Awards HSC Chancellor’s Scholar Award (Highest Award) • The purpose of this award is to recognize faculty whose balanced contributions to the multiple missions of our academic institution exemplify the model of an academic scholar. • Awardees shall demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in both teaching and research. • The premise of this award is that new knowledge gained through research can enhance the teaching environment, and the process of teaching can provide new insights that can stimulate research.

  5. Team-Based Special Awards HSC Collaborative Effort Award • The purpose of this award is to recognize a team of faculty/staff for their outstanding performance as a team in accomplishing a research, teaching, or service mission of the HSC. • Ideally, the team’s activities should cross school boundaries, with participants drawn from more than one school at the HSC.

  6. Team-Based Special Awards HSC Community-Engaged Research Award • The Community Engaged Research Award recognizes leadership and innovation in establishing academic-community partnerships to conduct research driven by and in response to the needs of communities in West Virginia. • The award honors the faculty member and his/her team and those research achievements involving community as meaningful research partners across various research processes.

  7. Nomination and Selection Process • the nomination and selection process will be administered by the Faculty Advisory Council (FAC). • a Faculty Awards Committee will include two representatives from each of the seven caucuses included in the FAC. • nominations can be made by faculty or administrators • a nomination form will be available electronically • the Awards Committee shall vote to select the winner in each category. • it is not necessary that all awards be given every year

Staff Awards Categories • one award will be made in each sector of staff listed below: • five sectors of classified staff • administrative/managerial sector • professional/non-teaching sector • paraprofessional/technician sector • clerical/secretarial sector • physical plant/maintenance/service sector • unclassified staff

The Awards • each award will include: • a certificate signed by the Chancellor • a gift card for $50-$100 (the specific store/restaurant will be selected by the awardee) • the awards will be presented at an annual reception held at the HSC and hosted by the Chancellor’s Office • held at 2:00PM to maximize attendance by staff (end of day shift) • the winners will be announced in the HSC News after the reception

Nomination and Selection Process • the nomination and selection process will be administered by the Chancellor’s Office. • nominations can be made by staff, faculty, or administrators • a nomination form will be available electronically or by hard copy • content of nomination form • Rationale for why the nominee deserves the award • Nominator can (optionally) list the names of other people (co-workers, supervisors, etc.) who can be contacted by the Selection Committee for additional information in support of the nomination • Nominations will be screened by the Chancellor’s Office to: • confirm eligibility as an HSC Staff Employee • confirm that the nominee has agreed to be nominated • determine which staff sector the nominee is a member of

  11. the Selection Committee shall be composed of 2 representatives from each of the sectors of staff (tentatively a total of 12 representatives) • the Selection Committee shall also include an ex officio member from the Chancellor’s Office who will provide assistance in guiding the process • the Selection Committee will work with the list of nominees provided by the Chancellor’s Office • the Selection Committee will obtain additional information by letter or by interview from supporters of each nominee • a standard form and set of questions shall be used to evaluate all nominees • the selection committee shall vote to determine the awardees in each sector.
