Is this a Real Problem? • The existence of internet addiction is still contested. • In many cases an obsession with the internet is seen as an extension of other addictions such as porn or gambling • Those who claim it is in fact a valid addiction say it is the long time spent online that is effecting peoples lives , which is characteristic of consuming addictions. Overview • Regardless of whether or not internet addiction is seen as a true addiction it is still seen as a problem • There are established symptoms of internet addiction , it has even been divided into several categories. Reading the Graph • This graph is based on statistics from a study performed at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. • The graph shows that those with severe addiction have seen negative effects in all areas except physically • While those with no addiction say their internet use only effects them physically

Some other Effects • High internet usage is connected to higher levels of depression. • Some truly obsessed gamers have been known to neglect their health and in some cases it has led to complete coronary failure and death in more than one instance. The Breakdown • Addictions to porn and gambling can be extensions of already existing addictions • Other addictions are a product of the internet itself • Surfing the web, addiction to gaming and social networking sites • Online affairs are an example of how people create a different persona on the internet, and can become obsessed with their second lives. Students • For students the internet is touted as a tool, however the internet does not improve academic performance • In a University of Texas at Austin study a significant drop in grades and participation was associated with high internet usage Melissa Whitney CIS 1055-12 - Internet Obsession
