History of Classes • January 2009 class started in Blackfriars Primary. 9am – 11am Thursdays. Free childcare available TASK. • February 2009 – GCNS staff attended JollyPhonics training. • June 2009 – GCNS staff met with St Francis’ staff and then Parents’ Focus group. • August 2009 – Blackfriars class resumes and St Francis’ class starts.
Lessons include… • Jolly Phonics, Rhyme World, Heinemann Mathematics! • Spelling, reading, writing, punctuation, grammar, numeracy – ie ALN • School projects have led to SQA Communication.
FE/Primary School Partnership? • Dr Sticht’s research showed that, “ a mother’s education level is a predictor to a child’s education level.” • 6500 FE ALN learners in Glasgow equates to 1000’s of children at a disadvantage. • Possibility of breaking that circle.
What have we learned? • Personal touch works – get out there and meet the parents/carers. • Parent evenings, Pre – entrant afternoons, coffee mornings, Mass for feast of St Francis! • Build on interested parties/stakeholders • Learning Connections, Bookstart, Culture and Sport Glasgow.
Additional benefits • “Focusing on Phonics”. • Several ALN students now reading and writing own sentences. • Scottish Book Trust opportunity……..
In conclusion….. • What’s next? • 25 primary schools in SE CPP • Tutor training in Focusing on Phonics • Thanks • Any questions???
