This presentation by John L. Smithson from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, delivered at the AERA Annual Meeting in April 2004, explores the effectiveness of using content maps for curriculum materials and management. It discusses the alignment of FOSS curriculum to assessments and state science standards across various grade levels (1-6). The growing interest in these tools among researchers, state assessment directors, curriculum directors, and educational administrators highlights their potential to improve instructional alignment with standards and enhance educational outcomes.

Over time, interest in the use of these tools has grown and moved: From Researchers (large scale measures of classroom practice) To State Assessment Directors (how do assessments relate to OTL & standards) To State Curriculum Directors (how does instruction relate to standards) To District and School Administrators (how do we bring instruction into greater alignment with standards) And we are now beginning to see potentially powerful uses of these descriptive tools by Curriculum Resource Staff and Teachers themselves.
