Tuscany Elementary School 2nd Logo here Jose RicoBLACH CONSTRUCTION COMPANY Brad Hulbert, Sr. Project Engineer Conclusions Measures Introduction • In my internship with Blach Construction Company, I was a project engineer intern for the Tuscany New Elementary School project. In this position I was responsible for project management and document control of an $18 million school construction project consisting of four classroom buildings, an administration office building, kindergarten building and multipurpose room. We worked to mitigate risk by documenting other changes during the construction process to ensure we followed proper procedures and that we communicated this with all stakeholders such as onsite inspectors, the school district administration, and our subcontractors. Blach Construction prides itself on its superior safety record on the building site, so maintaining safety, and quality control was also a high priority. This was a challenging task since we managed at least 30 companies which doesn’t include those companies’ tiered subcontractors. This experience provided many learning opportunities for me. For example, even though plans may be set and seem accurate according to the model, changes are always constant. Drawings need to updated, specifications may change. Ongoing communication with all team members is essential. I learned time-management skills and setting priorities. These skills can be applied to my studies at San Jose State University. Autobiographical Information I graduated from Everett Alvarez High school, attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo for a year. I came to HartnellCollege Fall of 2008. This Fall 2012 I will be attending San Jose State University pursuing a Bachelors in Civil Engineering, I plan to obtain my Masters in Structural Engineering. Figure 1. Management and document control consisted of communicating with the other project team members to ensure the project was continuing on schedule and on budget. Specifically these tasks included preparing Requests for Information (RFIs) regarding any construction problems. We were able to resolve any issues quickly by presenting photos of areas needing improvement and electronically transmitting them to the NTD Architects. The architects could immediately analyze and respond, and this would expedite the resolution process and allow us to maintain our tight schedule. Figure 7. These figures demonstrate a pressure test in progress for the water line. The test consisted of pressurizing a section of the water line to 200 psi. In order for the test to be a success the water line had to maintain 90% of the initial pressure for two hours. Because of the quality of work that I performed on the Tuscany project, my managers provided me with the opportunity to help manage the Los Padres Elementary School portable relocation project for Salinas City Elementary School District. This more challenging project consisted of demolition and abatement services for two existing modular classroom buildings; re-location of four modular class rooms, site paving, landscaping, and electrical and plumbing to make ready work for a future multi-purpose room.
