Bullying is a pervasive issue that affects the majority of students and can lead to severe consequences for victims, including emotional distress and extreme violence. This presentation, led by Donna LaPorte at Donovan Middle School, aims to define bullying, identify its various forms, and discuss the difference between bullying and harmless joking. Through surveys and reflection activities, students will analyze their experiences and consider their role in fostering a supportive school environment. Together, we will explore ways to combat bullying and promote kindness.

Why Talk About Bullying? • Is encountered by the majority of students. • Can cause serious harm to its victims. • Has been associated with victims’ acts of extreme violence against themselves and others in recent years. • Can be stopped. Bullying
What Is Bullying? Bullying is any behavior that is • Deliberate and hurtful • Repeated over time • Characterized by a relationship involving an imbalance of power, such as size or popularity • Bullying can • -- Be physical, verbal, emotional, social, behavioral, or any combination. • -- Occur on the bus, at school, at after-school activities, • and even online via the Internet.
Examples of Bullying • Hitting or kicking • Stealing or damaging belongings • Menacing gestures or facial expressions • Repeated name-calling • Teasing and taunting • Spreading rumors • Coercion • Intentional exclusion from the group • Cyberbullying
What is the difference between bullying and good-natured joking? • Is intentionallyhurtful. • Happens repeatedly. • Involves an imbalance of power, real or perceived, between the bully and the victim. Bullying
Activity • You will each receive a survey along with a red and blue sheet of paper. Each colored sheet should have tickets numbered 1-8. • You are going think about experiences they have had with your friends and classmates. • You will complete the survey independently (but please ask for help if you need a question explained. • We will collate the data by collecting a blue slip of paper for a "yes" answer or a red slip for a "no" answer to each question. • We will display the questions on the board and attach the appropriate blue and red slips of paper to show the response for each question. • You will answer reflection questions to help you process the information.

Using the Public Policy Analyst we will take a closer look at the problem of bullying.
