  2. Vision… • Develop a virtual model creation process to interactively aid in the design, build, and realization phase of a hospital construction process.

  3. 2 3 1 2 3 Hospital Design & Build Process • Design Phase: • Disconnect between designers and end-users (care-givers). • Build Phase: • Little to no way-finding training provided before move-in. • Lack of process planning. • Occupancy Phase: • Lack of patient interaction outside of hospital. • Little to no way-finding training provided before visit.

  4. 1 2 3 Vision throughout design & build process… Virtual Model Completion • Promote interaction between patients, nurses, etc. • Remotely educate on way-finding • Advertise. • Maximize way-finding transition. • Maximize Process Efficiencies Aid in optimizing design before it’s built. Hospital Design & Build Process Progress

  5. 1.Design Phase • Principle • To increase effectiveness with designing better workplaces by integrating verbal and behavioral feedbacks from nurses. • Evidence • 28.9% of nursing staff time was spent walking (Burgio et al. 1990) • the impact of unit layout on the amount of time spent walking (Shepley 2002; Shepley and Davies 2003; Sturdavant 1960;)

  6. 1. Design phase • Solution • Nurses are randomly assigned to different units. • They are asked to explore the unit and perform several medical tasks. • The distances and time used, and their verbal feedbacks are collected. Unit A Unit B

  7. 2. Build Phase • Principle • Maximize way-finding transition. • Improve process efficiencies and reduce errors. • Evidence People with virtual environmenttraining outperform people without training • times to perform route tasks • left-right directional judgments Hunt, M. E. (1984), Foreman, N., et al, (2005)

  8. 2. Build Phase • Solution • Nurses will be trained to perform medical tasks with the optimized routes before they move into new building. • Different nurses may have different tasks/ destinations. • A nurse in ICU will be trained to locate key locations of • Medication room • Support room • Equipments • Certain people etc.

  9. 3. Occupancy Phase • Principle • Provide transparency of the environment to patients and visitors. • Solution • Users can use the virtual environment to know how to find key locations in the hospital. Destination: ED Distance: 200 Ft Turn right now

  10. resources • A large LCD screen • Computer • Joy stickers • Digital design drawings from HKS
