  2. What is Taxonomy? Taxonomy - the science of classifyingall organisms (living AND extinct) • Not to be confusedwith taxidermy...

  3. Classifying everything ever... • How would you classify all life on Earth?

  4. The current system... • Very old (1700s), all ‘names’ in latin • Based on physical/structural features( the more two things look alike, the closer their relationship) • 7 levels of organization

  5. King Paul... • It all starts withKingdom... • There are 5 Kingdoms: • Anamalia • Plantae • Fungi • Protista • Eubacteria • Archaebacteria

  6. Commomtaxonomics… • Every level of classification is more specific • The scientific names that matter most (and are the MOST specific) are the Genus and Species Species – a group of organisms with similar features that can interbreed to make fertile offspring + = mule horse donkey
