Reading Textbook Material • Use memory tips- diagrams, mnemonic devices, concept maps, graphic organizers, illustrations • Look up new words and add them to your vocabulary • Keep in mind that reading a textbook generally takes more effort than and work on your part than does typical pleasure reading of library books. • Look for important words and ideas that help you understand the material. • Break down difficult sentences into their simpler parts. • Stop, Think, Summarize, and Write

  3. Reading Text Material • Look at all of the tables, pictures, charts, and other diagrams. Use artifact or document analysis for each. • SOAPStone-Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Subject, Tone • APPARTS-Author, Place, Prior Knowledge, Audience, Reason, Topic (Main Idea), Significance • SPICE-Social, Political, Interaction between Humans and Environment, Economic • ASPIRE for classical empires- Art/Architecture, Social, Political, Intellectual, Religion, Economic Question What You Read • Restate Difficult Material in Simpler Language • Backtrack and reread difficult parts of the text.
