This guide outlines a structured approach to taking reading notes for nightly assignments. Each entry should consist of one full journal page or half a typed page, organized with clear chapter titles and dates. Emphasize observations on the author's choices and narrative strategies, as well as the central themes and significant ideas from the text. Additionally, formulate at least three questions—balancing analytical and essential inquiries—to deepen understanding and engagement with the material. Keep your notes organized for easy reference throughout the quarter.

Reading Notes • For each night’s reading assignment, you must take one journal page/half a typed page of notes. You can keep them in your class journal, or type them, or…whatever, as long as you have them in class and can keep track of them for the rest of the quarter. Notes should be clearly • CHAPTER TITLES and DATE written clearly at the top • STYLE: clearly title this section and jot down observations (with passage/page references or examples) or the strategies O’Brien uses—choices he makes about how he tells these stories • IDEAS: clearly title this section and include notes on what you see as the theme or important ideas within the story. • QUESTIONS: Ask at least three questions that arise from your reading of this section. Try to mix in both analytical and essential questions.
