  1. Christian Science New Thought

  2. Mary Baker Eddy • A native of New Hampshire who was originally a member of a congregational Church. • She suffered from nervous disorders which could not be cured by doctors. • 1866 she claimed to have been cured while reading a New Testament account of one of the miraculous healings effected by Jesus. • Through this experience she founded the Science of Christianity also known as Christian Science

  3. Christian Science • Christian Science is a set of beliefs and practices belonging to the metaphysical family of new religious movements. • The Bible and Baker’s 1875 book Science and Health are their biggest source of spiritual guidance. • In 1883 a revised version of Science and Health included Key to the Scriptures. • Christian Scientists have no need of a formal creed or doctrines. • The Bible is the inspired word of God.

  4. Jesus Christ/Reality • Jesus Christ is the “way-shower” • There is a distinction between man Jesus and Christ. • Christ was Jesus’ divine nature . • As both Son of God and Son of Man, Jesus Chrsit was the mediator between God and humanity. • All reality is Spiritual; just an illusion. • Matter, disease and and death are unreal. • Human suffering arises from the fact that we do not recognize the unreality of the nonspiritual. • God’s and God’s goodness are the only reality. • Jesus’ awareness of this enabled him to overcome all forms of suffering, including death.

  5. Continued • Christian Science Churches are lay organizations that have no ministers. • Services consist of reading from the Bible, Eddy’s book and hymns. • Only the Lord’s Prayer is recited out-loud, every prayer else is silent. • To prevent doctrinal deviation, preaching during service was forbidden. • Baptism and Eucharist are the only two sacraments Christian Scientists acknowledge.

  6. Baptism and Eucharist • Christian Scientists do not celebrate these tow sacraments outwardly with symbols and ceremonies. • Instead Baptism is the ongoing purification of thought, and the Eucharist is spiritual communion with God through silent prayer and Christian living.

  7. George’s Thoughts • Is it so different from other Christian denominations? • Medicine vs Fate
