Influenza Virus • The CDC defines Influenza (also known as the flu) as a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. • It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. • The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly and may include a variety symptoms.

  3. Influenza “Flu-Like” Symptoms • Fever (usually high) • Headache • Extreme tiredness • Dry cough • Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Muscle aches • Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, also can occur but are more common in children than adults

  4. Seasonal or Regular Flu • Occurs on an annual basis as early November to as late as May • Most at risk are young children, older adults, pregnant women, and the immunocompromised • Prevention = competent vaccine & good hygiene practices

  5. Pandemic Influenza • Global flu outbreak due to the an aggressive strain of the flu virus • Spreads faster because there are no vaccines and little immunity to the virus • Flu-like symptoms tend to be more severe

  6. Don’t Share Your Germs • Flu is spread by • Coughing or sneezing • Unwashed hands • Sharing personal items • Enters through the nose, eyes, and mouth

  7. What can you do? • Seasonal Flu • Get your flu shots • Stop the spread through proper hygiene • Pandemic • Engage in individual and family planning • Stop the spread through proper hygiene

  8. What can you do? • Wash your hands • Cover when you cough and sneeze • Stay home when your sick

  9. Washing your hands • Wet Hands with warm water • Lather hands with soap • Scrub for at least 20 seconds • Rinse • Dry • Avoid using clean hands to touch faucet and door • Try singing Happy Birthday to be sure you do not finish to early

  10. Cover your cough or sneeze • Use a tissue over your nose or mouth • Throw the tissue away • Wash your hands • If there are no tissues available, use the sleeve of your upper arm to cover your nose or mouth • Do not use your hands. They spread germs

  11. Keep Sick at Home • You probably should stay home or go to the doctor if you have flu-like symptoms that came on suddenly • It’s probably allergies or a cold if… • Your only symptoms are sniffles, sneezes or a mild cough It came on gradually
