THE VIRTUAL OFFICE • Evidence of the virtual office began to emerge during the 1970s as low-priced microcomputers and communications equipment made it possible for individuals to work at home • At the time, the term teleprocessing was used, later the term telecommuting was introduced to describe how employees could electronically “commute” to work

THE DEFINITION OF VIRTUAL ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE • In general , • Has little or no formal structure , few permanent employees , a very small staff and a modest • administrative facility. • Highly centralized with little or no departmentalization • Provides maximum flexibility while concentrating on what the organization does best • Reduced control over key parts of the business • Electronic communication networks enable firms to become virtual organizations, so now their development work can be done almost anywhere

'Virtual organizations 'Virtual organizations' are a set of organizational that rely on multiparty co-operative relationships between people across structural, temporal and geographic boundaries. Flexibility is brought about in part by reconfigurable networks of computer based communications that allow organizations to co-ordinate their activities and in part by a management philosophy based on collaboration and innovation.
