  1. Sexual Reproduction 6.4 Studying Genetic Changes Student text p.204-211

  2. Genetic Conditions • Down Syndrome • Down syndrome is a genetic condition in which a person has 47 chromosomes instead of the usual 46 • Cystic Fibrosis • a disease passed down through families. • causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other areas of the body. • It is one of the most common chronic lung diseases in children. • Allderdice Syndrome • A local genetic condition (Sandy Point, in the West Coast of NL) • Identified by Dr. Penny Allderdice at the Health Sciences Center, Memorial University of Newfoundland.

  3. Studying Genetic Changes • Gregor Mendel • Mid-1800s • Experimented with inherited traits in pea plants.

  4. Studying Genetic Changes cont… • Francis Crick & James Watson • 1953 • Described the structure of DNA and how it replicates. • Proposed the double helix structure.

  5. The Human Genome Project • Genome: consists of the full set of genetic material that makes up an organism. • Made a map to identify genes • This information may be used to check for particular diseases. (ex. Allderdice Syndrome) Human Genome Project 1986-2003

  6. Genetic Engineering • Human manipulation of an organisms genome using current DNA technology • Alters the genetic makeup of an organism • Has applications to many areas including the food we eat and issues related to health. • This has led to many concerns and fears both inside and outside the scientific community.

  7. Genetic Engineering in Newfoundland & Labrador • Aqua Bounty Farms • Focused on health and productivity applications in aquaculture • St. John’s, NL

  8. Journal Reflection Activity • Please read and reflect on the genetic engineering article your teacher will give you. • Here is a link to the online copy of the article! • http://greenbio.checkbiotech.org/news/genetic_engineering_makes_apples_more_environmentally_friendly In your reflection be sure to include the following: - What is your view point on genetic engineering? - Do you think genetic engineering has more positive or negative impacts on humans and the planet? - What are some of the positive and negative impacts of genetic engineering?
