Grant Overview - Goals • The collaborative is committed to helping students in the consortium schools prepare to succeed in academically rigorous courses. • The collaborative will engage educators (teachers, administrators, counselors), parents and students in carefully constructed learning opportunities to build awareness among all stakeholders of the importance of college and to increase the number of high school students who graduate college ready and prepared.

Grant Overview – Goals (cont.) • AVID Center and Rice University have set very specific, measurable goals for the initiative. • Participating schools within the consortium will set specific campus-wide goals based on the campus specific data analysis during the Team College and Leadership strands.

Grant Overview – Measurable Objectives • 20% increase in the number of AP course enrollments, AP course completions, number of AP exams taken, and number of AP exam scores of 3, 4, & 5 for AVID students. (a 10% increase for all students) • 20% increase in advanced courses among AVID students (honors, Pre-AP, GT) as defined by AVID Texas Data II Reports. (a 10% increase for all students)

Grant Overview – Measurable Objectives (cont.) • An increase in the level of rigor of courses taught at the high school level as demonstrated by increases in AP data. • A decrease in the equity and achievement gaps among subgroups in AP courses and AP exam scores. • Completion of data analysis, goal setting, and reflection and refinement of the goals by each campus throughout the initiative.

Grant Overview – Measurable Objectives (cont.) • Evaluation of the college-going culture on the campuses by comparing pre- and post- survey assessments to demonstrate the institutionalization of a college-going culture. • Assessment surveys will be based on Dr. David Conley’s college readiness keys.

Leading and Sustaining College Readiness • Required focus by Houston Endowment • District Liaisons • One per district – Priscilla Zoeller – Houston ISD • Team College • Team of four from each participating campus • Administrator, AP lead teacher, AVID Elective Teacher, counselor • Provide leadership for grant initiatives on each campus • Help determine staff members to attend trainings and have expectations for follow-up back on campus • Meet 2-3 times with AVID-Rice during each year of grant • Review data and set campus goals based on data • Be members of the AVID site team

  10. Leading and Sustaining College Readiness • Team College • Site self-analysis of data (Data I & II, CSS, AP and SAT) • Multi-site meetings three times in Year 1 • Oct 12 - 8-11 AM; HISD Board Room • week of January 28-Feb 1 – exact time and location TBD • (May or June) TBD

Leading and Sustaining College Readiness • Data Analysis Training • Participants: Campus principals and district liaison • November 2-3, 2012 – Rice University • Leadership for College Readiness (LCR) • Same participants as for Data Analysis • March 1-2, 2013 (tentative) – Rice University • Site and administrative support by consultants

SAT Readiness • SAT Readiness workshop • 3 participants per high school campus - AVID, ELA and Math teachers • Alief (Sept 25) or Pasadena (Sept 26) • Purpose - to design a school-based SAT preparation course • SAT Study Guides (1800 – AVID students only) • 11th & 12th or 10th & 11th (district option) • SAT Readiness online (2921 accounts - AVID students only) • 11th & 12th Grades and others • Online tutorial and/or session for AVID coordinators • Access to computers for students

College and Career Counseling • October 30, 2012 – Rice University • Educating secondary counselors on role in helping students navigate college and career pathways • Keynote & breakout sessions • College admissions process, creating college ready student schedules, college and career success for all students, tips for the AVID counselor, middle school counselors role in college readiness, etc. • 3 Participants per campus: suggested - AVID-trained counselor, AVID teacher, college/career readiness administrator

  14. Tutor Training • Rice students • Part 1 and Part 2 trainings (12 hours) • Tutors for spring semester • Tutor contact list to be provided • Background checks and training costs covered by grant – campus pay hourly wage • Available spots for Nov 3 training • Additional information in October E-News

  15. Preparing for High School • November 6, 2012 (12:30 – 3:30) – Rice University • Trainer of Trainers model • 3-hour training for 2-3 participants per middle school campus (AVID teachers, 8th grade counselor and/or administrator) • Implementation method for delivery to all 8th graders to be chosen by campuses • Topics: Value of education, GPA, AP courses, portfolios, financial aid, etc.

College Board Workshops • Nov 7 & Nov 8 (awaiting College Board confirmation) • Pre-AP Strategies, 30 per session • November 7 (Pasadena) • Inquiry in Science (MS) • Inquiry in Science (HS) • ELA Composition (MS) • November 8 (Channelview) • Developing Algebraic Thinking (MS) • Developing Algebraic Thinking (HS) • Social Studies: Using Visuals in MS Classrooms

  17. College Readiness Summit • December 4, 2012 – Rice University • 3 participants per campus • Build awareness within the Houston education community about the essential skills needed to prepare students to be successful in college; proven college readiness strategies • Keynote and breakout sessions • Strands: AVID, AP/College Board, counselors, college admissions information • Target audience: teachers, administrators, counselors, parents

Procedures • Monthly E-News • Sent to district liaisons and Team College • Program updates, due dates and upcoming events • Registration • Due dates prior to event; waitlist • Participation • Expectation of 90% attendance per campus • Sign-in sheets • Program Evaluation • Capability of online surveys • Connection to individual PEIMS numbers

  19. District and Campus Agreements • Campus letters of commitment • Active participation in programming • Participation in evaluations • Principal attendance at Leading & Sustaining College Readiness • Fiscal responsibility of $1,410 per year
