  1. Where is the Scriptural authority for a Synagogue? Model of the 1st century synagogue at Gamla

  2. Two Current Issues: • First, if there was no authority for a synagogue, and Jesus and the apostles used & approved of synagogues, is this not proof that we do not need divine authority for everything we do? • Second, although the synagogue was not under the auspices of the God-ordained services of the Temple, it was accepted as an effort by righteous men to teach and promote the worship and word of God. Is this not parallel to the efforts of Christians today who organize themselves to teach God’s truth and promote His kingdom outside of the local church?

  3. Jesus approved of the Synagogue • His participation and silence necessarily imply approval. • He customarily participated in synagogue services (Luke 4:15-16) • He used synagogues as venues to preach & to perform miracles. (Lk. 4:44; 13:10; Matt 9:35)

  4. Apostles & Preachers used the Synagogues to reach the Jews • Stephen (Acts 6:8-10) • Paul (Acts 13:4-6) The Theodotus Inscription Scholars associate this inscription with the “Synagogue of the Freedmen” mentioned in Acts 6

  5. The Jewish explanation of the authority for Synagogues • The Jews cite the rabbis and misapply Scripture to justify synagogues. • The Jewish Encyclopedia cites, Exodus 18:20, Acts 15:21 & Jeremiah 39:8 to support the claim that the synagogue was “of ancient origin, dating back to the time of Moses.” (Jewish Encyclopedia, 1906, “Synagogue”) • It is not surprising that their arguments are weak & tradition bound. (Mark 7:9, 13)

  6. Basic Principles for Establishing Divine Authority from Scripture • How authority is communicated: • Command/Statement, • Approved Example • Necessary Conclusion • Breadth of Authority: General vs. Specific • Silence prohibits!

  7. Bible Authority for the Synagogue • God had multiple meeting places in the land of Israel in the O.T. (Psalm 74:7-8) • God’s people were authorized to worship Him in an assembly(Psalm 111:1; 107:31-32) • God expected those who were scattered among the nations to remember Him.(2 Chronicles 6:36-39; Ezekiel 6:8-9; 11:16) • Godly men organized Scripture reading, teaching and worship outside of the Temple(Nehemiah 8:1-8)
