  2. WHAT ARE GREENWAYS?

A global grassroots or community-based movement, which involves business, government and non-governmental organizations working together for sustainable development • Multi-functional corridors for non-motorized transport developed and organized by local people • Promoters of environmentally-friendly tourism, healthy life-styles and quality-of-life improvements for both locals and visitors • Natural and cultural heritage are resources for local products, local enterprise • Local partnerships enable risks, costs and benefits to be shared for the sustainable development of the region as a whole • Open source, open access enables sustainability --- no one is in charge!
