  1. The Metric System No Fractions Necessary!

  2. Why Do We Need It? C:\Documents and Settings\burke.wendi\Desktop\American Chopper vs The Metric System [www.keepvid.com].mp4

  3. Base Units/Suffixes (symbols) The base units in the metric system are determined by what you’re measuring. Length=meter (m) Volume=liter (L) Mass=gram (g) These are also your metric suffixes.

  4. Prefixes (symbols) & value • Kilo (k)=1,000. • Hecto (h)=100. • Deka (da)=10. • Base (m, L, or g)=1. • Deci (d)=.1 • Centi (c)=.01 • Milli (m)=.001 Need a way to remember the order? King Hector Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk

  5. Using the “Metric Staircase” • Think of the prefixes like a set of stairs Kilo *As you move down the stairs Hecto you move the decimal one Deka place to the right for every step. Base *As you move up the Deci stairs you move the decimal Centi one place to the left for every Milli step.

  6. Units • Combine your prefix and your suffix. • Example: • mg=milligram • km=kilometer • mL=milliliter • Has anyone ever run the hectometer dash?

  7. Practice Time! • kg=________?__________ • mm=_______?__________ • dL=________?__________ • dekagram=_________?________ • centimeter=________?_________ • milligram=_________?_________

  8. It’s Easy To Convert • C:\Documents and Settings\burke.wendi\Desktop\Converting units.flv

  9. Practice Conversions • Do the following conversions using the “Metric Staircase”-Just count how many steps you take and then move the decimal whichever way you went on the staircase. • 39cm=____?____m • .82kg=____?____g • 500mL=_____?____L The “Metric Staircase” can only be used when converting within the metric system!

  10. Practice Conversions • These are a tad more difficult because you are converting into a different measuring system. You have to convert the numbers like on the video. • 8cm=____?____in • 1821mi=____?____km
