  1. Cross-Disciplinary Design Teams for Biomedical Engineering Design Conrad M. Zapanta, Ph.D. Wayne Chung, MID Carnegie Mellon University Department of Biomedical Engineering School of Design

  2. Novelty • Case studies, historical precedence, and leaders in the medical device industry have shown that truly integrated project teams are the primary modes of innovative progress and success. • How do we do this in the classroom?

  3. Novelty • Engineering students (Department of Biomedical Engineering) and design students (School of Design) • Have educational experiences and skill sets that are significantly different • Results in two groups of undergraduate students who both think and work very differently

  4. How Does it Work • Two semester class based on Stanford Biodesign curriculum • 12 teams, ~ 4 to 5 teams are integrated with design students • One to two designers per team • Design faculty member works with all teams

  5. Future Work • Developing methods to assess thinking and processes of integrated teams vs. those without design majors • Creativity and innovation • Add summer clinical immersion experience for engineering and design students to identify potential projects
