  1. Asha for Education August 26, 2006 Monthly Meeting Back 2 School Phase III Project Proposal Support for Tsunami Affected Children Asha AZ Project Champions – Mukund Asha Chennai Contacts – Lakshmi and Rajaraman

  2. Background More than a year and a half since the Tsunami hit the coast of Tamilnadu. A lot of children had suffered from this tragedy. Their schooling had also been impacted. Many children lost their school books, notebooks, uniforms etc. The schools play an important role in returning to these children a sense of normalcy. It further provides them a secure environment away from their home. Thus it is important that we get the children these materials so that they can resume their normal schooling activities. It is with this intention that Asha Chennai provided “Back to School” support for about 2500 children last year (for the academic year 2005-06). We are continuing to receive requests for the Back to School support for the year 2006-07 as well. The regeneration of many of the affected communities is a slow and ongoing process. Therefore this help is required for the continuing education of these children.

  3. The schools that have been identified for support by Asha, are schools where a majority of the children are affected by the Tsunami. In area specific cases the intended beneficiaries of the project are not children of a specific school but children from an affected village that go to different schools. There is no plan for long-term involvement with all these schools. The volunteers (they are the people who have identified the needs working in these areas plan to follow up with the children in these areas at least once a month). However- We are continuing to work with the Akkarapettai School where we have helped with rebuilding the school as well provided support under Back 2 school Phase 1. We are also likely involved with the teacher training especially for English language teaching with some of the Corporation schools

  4. Schools/ Localities Identified for Phase III • Some of the schools and organizations are identified below: • The children have been identified from areas through • CLEAD / UWF an organization we worked with in the earlier Phase I of the project. The children will be from Srinivasapuram, Kasimedu Kuppam and Pazhaverkadu in Grade 1 to 12 Ages 5 to 18 years age • These children go to different schools mostly aided by the govt. They schools do not get goverment uniforms and have to make their own arrangements for notebooks. • Corporation schools in Zone 6 through the very committed Zone supervisors who worked with us in the earlier phase 1 • A group of women who are trying to organise self help groups similar to Nadukuppam in Phase 2 at Tiruvattiyur and Tollgate areas. Grades K-12

  5. Find below the abstract of the requirements of the students.Finer details are available in the excel sheet (linked to this page).

  6. We are currently requesting support for an 2500 children at the cost of Rs 800 per child. Of these some 1000 children are those requiring support for the second year now – meaning we supported them in 2005 as well. Some Good news for Children and all of us Children studying in govt. aided and govt. schools are likely to get Rs300 per child per month for a year. The data is being compiled at the district level offices of the Chief Education Officers. The district collectors will decide on this very soon. The measure if approved will help students whom we are supporting for the next academic year 2007-2008. If that be the case Asha Chennai can close project back to school with Phase 3.
