  2. Childhood • Born: between 1340 and 1345 in London • Parents: John and Agnes Chaucer (shoemaker) • Wealthy and distant relatives of the royal family • Was very educated • Was appointed to the household of Elizabeth, Countess of Ulster and her husband the Prince

  3. 100 Years War • Went to France with Edward III army • Skillful soldier • Taken prisoner at Retters • Ransomed by the king and his friend • Latter became the kings page and was pensioned for life

  4. Family • Married Philippa Roet • 3 children (for sure) • Thomas, Elizabeth, Lewis (A Treatise on the Astrolabe)

  5. Midlife • Pursued many occupations: soldier, diplomat, intelligence officer, construction supervisor, controller of customs, and member of parliament • Became bankrupt, sued for debt, friends were executed, charged with rape, ect. • Appointed justice of the peace and pensioned by the king • Produced most of best poetry

  6. Later Life • Wrote Canterbury Tales • Never finished • Where he was mugged twice in the same day by the same people • Was published later by limited edition club • Died on October 25, 1400 in London (murdered?) • Buried in Westminster Abbey (Poets Corner)

Poetry • The Book of the Dutchess • Written shortly after the death of the Dutchess of Lancaster • A Treatise on the Astrolabe(“little Lewis”at 10) • The House of Fame (1374-1385) • Translated Consolation of Philosophy (by Boethius) then wrote Parliament of Birds • Canterbury tales (started in 1387, early 40’s)
