Guiding & Investing in New Special Educators Mary Aery, Special Education Service Agency (SESA) - Anchorage, Alaska Reduce special education referrals for preschool students by providing supports for students, teachers and classrooms: • Developed Alaska Social Skill Cards demonstrating culturally relevant situations used to encourage better behavior in school and home • Created a Gwitchin-language video that teaches social skills while enhancing preschoolers’ native language • Encouraged positive relationships and healthy school environments by creating culturally relevant social skills cards to be taught by embedding one card into academic and social lessons each week • Promoted a manners book creation contest to encourage preschool students to express what manners and social skills mean in their lives
