Supporting the CoMLSynthesis Plan Jesse Ausubel Alfred P. Sloan Foundation What might Sloan do directly to help? What help in addition to Sloan do we need?
Supporting Synthesis 1:Within each Field Project • Final grants for 2010 activities available to all Field Programs, FMAP, HMAP (proposals due not later than 1 October 2009) • Will depend on progress in synthesis already achieved
Supporting Synthesis II:Across projects • Additional resources may be considered for cross-cutting or integrative activities re diversity, distribution, abundance Examples: a) Completing list of named species (WoRMS) b) Estimating how many marine species remain to be discovered c) Offering a new global biogeography of the oceans (landscape scale classification) d) Creating a new geography of marine hot spots (high diversity and/or high endemism)
Supporting Synthesis II:Across projects (2) Examples continued: e) Creating range maps for 80,000+ species f) Freshly estimating biomass by trophic levels g) Freshly estimating changes in size distribution of animals h) Updating the marine tree of life & adding many leaves by barcodes + other info (proposal in review)
Supporting Synthesis III:Across projects • Additional resources may be considered for cross-cutting or integrative activities re diversity, distribution, abundance (3) Examples: i) Completing 230,000 marine species pages for Encyclopedia of Life j) Considering areas of Oceans Past and Present as precursors for Oceans Future (oxgyen minimum zones [hypoxia], naturally acid environments [near CO2 outgassing Marianas volanoes], areas of recovery…)
Incentives • Forms of recognition? Small awards at dinner tonight • Money prizes? • Let’s think together about what motivates us!!
