Enjoy the Journey “Those of you who have worked at your genealogies, who realize the importance of the work and have felt the excitement that comes from tying families together and learning of your noble heritage, need to share that excitement with others. Help them to see the joy and fulfillment you see in the work. There is much to be done, as you all know, and there are many, many members who could do the work and who would enjoy doing the work if some of us—all of you—would just ignite that spark in them through your enthusiasm, example, and devotion.” (Ezra Taft Benson, Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 162)

Unity Among Leaders • Quarterly newsletter to those within your stewardship. • Keep everyone on the same “wave length”. • Share motivational ideas • Share success experiences • Suggest helpful tips, quotes, etc. • Involve other organizations • Use correlation and planning meetings effectively. • Make sure you are on the agenda and have something to contribute.

  4. For some, the experience is like Laman and Lemuel returning for the brass plates --- arduous and unpleasant. Many LDS members say: “We do family history because we should, because it is right.” Why Do We Do Family History? • For others, it is an adventure because they enjoy the journey.

  5. Journey lovers often entice the unconverted by doing their research for them. The indifferent find one or two tidbits interesting, but their eyes soon glaze over. Change of Heart – Spirit of Elijah • They may be grateful, but their heart has not been changed.

  6. The pleasure comes from putting forth effort and eventually having success. Teach them how to fish. It will taste better than the fully cooked fish on a platter. How do we Help Others Feel the Joy?

  7. 5 Basic Steps • Step 1: Gather and organize what you and other family members already know. • Step 2: Decide what additional information you need. • Step 3: Search compiled and original records. • Step 4: Analyze and evaluate your findings. • Step 5: Record, document and share your findings

  8. Step 1: What Do You Know? • Select 1 family or individual to work on. • On a family group sheet, enter everything you know about the family or individual.

  10. How Do I Locate Sylvia’s Parents? • Go Backward to go Forward • Find documents for Sylvia’s information • How? • Consult a “Record Selection Table” • Where? • FamilySearch Wiki • Go to FamilySearch.org • Click on Research Helps > Search the Wiki

  11. Search the Wiki Enter Record Selection Table You can also add a specific locality if you wish.

Vital Records • Birth Certificate • Sylvia was born in born in 1880 before vital records were kept. • Marriage Certificate • Western States Marriage Index • Death Certificate • Check “Record Search” for death certificates (1904-1956) • Sylvia died in 1958, to late for the online death certificates. • Copy ordered from State per information found online at CDC.gov (Center for Disease Control & Prevention)

How Do I Locate Other Children? • Consult “Record Selection Table” at FamilySearch Wiki. • Let’s choose Census and from the information we found in the wiki, follow the family through all available Census records. • Sylvia was born in Feb.1880 so let’s start with the 1880 census. • There is no census available for 1890 • Then check 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 Select a record type to get more help.

How Do I Locate Han’s Death? • Consult the “Record Selection Table” Found Hans • Wiki says Record Search has Death Certificates (1904-1956) • Hans died between 1910-1920 • Angeline died after 1930 (would be 93 in 1956) • Other children (Camilla, Edith, Abigail, Aaron) • Wiki says check USGenWeb for Cemetery Records • Han & Aaron were buried in Honeyville Found Aaron
