Exploring Shapes and Angles: Ms. Cogan’s Math Trail Adventure

On Thursday, 29th September 2011, Ms. Cogan's class embarked on an exciting Math Trail, enjoying beautiful blue skies and sunshine. The students explored their surroundings to identify various shapes. They discovered 1D shapes like lines and shadows, then moved on to 2D shapes, spotting circles, squares, rectangles, pentagons, and more in the school grounds. Their adventure continued with 3D shapes, including cuboids and cylinders. Along the way, they learned about angles—right angles, acute, obtuse, and reflex angles—demonstrating that math truly surrounds us in everyday life.

  1. Ms Cogan’s class went on a Math’s Trail on Thursday 29th September 2011. We were fortunate with the weather ..blue skies and brilliant sunshine!

  2. We found a 1D shape! The line that separates the shadow of the storage container from the bright green grass

  3. 2. Then we searched the school grounds for 2D shapes Circular centre in the flower Square window Rectangular windows

  4. 2D shapes have length and width Will the rat be attracted to the circular entrance in the rat trap ? Can you see the 2D shape? Yes a semi-circle!

  5. 2D means 2 dimensions Squares have 4 equal sides and 4 right angles A semi-circle!

  6. 2D shapes…. I see a pentagon ….Can you? Another trapezium

  7. Maths all around us A semi-circle A trapezium is a quadrilateral

  8. We found a perfect right angle! Vertical line Parallel lines Horizontal line

  9. And some final 2D shapes……. Square Can you spot the trapezium ? An isosceles triangle

  10. Next we looked for 3D shapes The water container is another cuboid The storage container is a cuboid

  11. A 3D shape has length, width and depth. Two more cylinders! Look at the cylinder

  12. Some more 3 D shapes! I found a cylinder Another cuboid

  13. More 3D shapes……….. The Bath Road block of houses are a pentagonal prism Can you find the cube…at the top of the chimney?

  14. Length, width and depth = 3D Can you spot the sphere …..on top of Bremore Castle? Could the roof in the Mill Shopping Centre be a trapezoidal prism??

  15. We found some angles See the right angle Right angle at the corner of the step

  16. See the reflex angle of 270 degrees

  17. When 2 lines meet they make an angle Straight angle straight angle

  18. We learned that shape, lines and angles are all around us….1D shape2D shapes3D shapesParallel lines,Vertical linesHorizontal lines ,Perpendicular linesAcute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles
