Promoting French in FIG: The Role of the Francophone Group

The French-speaking group of FIG (GFF) was established in 1998 to address cultural and relational needs influenced by the transition to English as the primary working language. Although it operates as an informal entity, GFF plays a crucial role in fostering dialogue and collaboration through annual meetings and exchanges. It contributed to the Task Force on Cultures and Languages and continues to serve as a platform for sharing educational resources in French. The group aims to create a supportive network for Francophone professionals.

  1. GFF=Groupe Francophone de la FIG • The French speaking group of FIG was created just before the Brighton congress in 1998 • Cultural and relational motivations initially triggered by the adoption of English as a unique working language • Set up as an informal group => it could not be/it is not a statutory entity FIG WW 2003 - M.Mayoud/GFF

  2. GFF : Motivations and Facts • Annual meeting and dinner at each FIG working week, with some individual exchanges in between • The GFF strongly contributed to the various reflections which initiated the Task Force on Cultures and Languages • Some initial ideas - like meetings, the welcome of students or the exchange of teaching material - depend on good will and money from private or governmental bodies, or simply on benevolent people... FIG WW 2003 - M.Mayoud/GFF

  3. GFF : web links http://www.geometre-expert.fr/Cfrfig/index.html • Web site initially though as a central source of useful information about professional education in French, publications, meetings, etc. • Still active, but no longer completed because of the set-up of more and more informative web sites from OGE, AFT and other French speaking bodies • Will be reviewed and maintained in a more simple way FIG WW 2003 - M.Mayoud/GFF

  4. Prospects for any FIG Language Group • A unique html web page addressed from the FIGTREE may gather some basic information and a collection of useful links to specific sites and documents expressed in a given group language • The concept of FIG Language Groups must be effectively supported by the Council and associated with “regional” incentives & specific events • Official recognition by FIG statutes?... FIG WW 2003 - M.Mayoud/GFF
