  2. LINCOLN THE LAWYER Theme Lincoln moved to Springfield, Illinois, in 1837 and became a partner in a law firm there. Freedom &Liberty • Lincoln's mother died in 1818 • His sister died in 1818 • Lincoln and Herndon had a long and very successful partnership “Give our clients to understand that the election of a President makes no change in the firm of Lincoln & Herndon.” Lincoln married with Mary Lincoln

  3. TURNING POINT “Honest Abe” Congress had passed the Kansas- Nebraska Act B A D N E W S William Henry Herndon, Lincoln’s law partner. Lincoln put all of his energy into his work as a lawyer. The law office of Lincoln & Herndon in Springfield, Illinois.

  4. THEPEOPLE’S CHOICE In the p residential election of 1860, Hannibal Hamlin, a Senator from Maine, ran as Lincoln's vice president. On his visit to New York in February 1860, the fifty-one-year-old Lincoln posed for his photograph. He appears tall and confident. The pose became known as Lincoln's “Cooper Union” photograph. Lincoln’s great speech “To this place and the kindness of these people, I owe every thing. Here I have lived a quarter of a century, and have passed from a young to an old man. Here my children have been born, and one is buried. I now leave, not knowing when, or whether ever, I may return, with a task before me greater than (George Washington faced)… I bid you affectionate farewell.”

  5. Gettysburg Address “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live. It Is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.” The Union victory at Gettysburg was a turning point in the war. This studio photograph of Lincoln was taken on November 8, 1863, just ten days before he spoke at Gettysburg Most African Americans liked the idea of being able to enlist in the Union army.

  6. “I Know I’m In Danger “The president is shot!” John Wilkes Booth was the president’s assassin. Born in Maryland, he was a well-known actor of the time. Thousands watch as Lincoln’s funeral procession makes its way up Broadway in New York City.

  7. Lincoln Remembered One of the most important is the Lincoln National Monument. After Lincoln’s death, artists often pictured him with George Washington. Washington had been named the “father of our country.” Lincoln was called the nation’s “savior.” This sculpted image of Lincoln by Victor D. Brenner was used in designing the Lincoln cent.
