  1. Trench Warfare Ms. Maharaj

  2. Recap: • Trenches were intentional “dug outs” that were made in WW1 as the areas where soldiers would fight from unseen (strategic) • They were meant to provide some protection from direct gun fire (they were partially underground) • The trenches became the half underground military bases where soldiers lived, fought and died

  3. Trenches You defended your country, fought, slept and ate in the Trenches

  4. How did the war come to the trenches Germans turned south too soon and clashed with the French Army The British descend from the North and the French were already stationed at the eastern border The German’s were boxed in!

  5. Why Trenches? Geography • France is mainly farmland, no hills or valleys to hide in • There was no place to safely set up military bases without being seen or an easy target Strategy • They built the trenches strategically to stay out of sight, hidden as if underground (zigzag patterns to evade attacks)

  6. The Trench System

  7. Trench Strategy Trenches has sandbags at the top to give some height (soldiers could be hidden even standing) No man’s land as the land in between both army’s that no one crossed because they would be immediately attacked You could feel splatter from no man’s land if someone was shot (bullets, shards and even blood)

  8. Trench Strategy: Over the Top • Generals would order advances or attacks “over the top” • It meant climbing over the sandbags and attacking full on in No Man’s Land • If they got over no man’s land to the enemy’s trench, the enemy would move back to another row of trenches • They would try taking the trench back (always a back and forth type of battle)

  9. Conditions in the trench Disgusting and Filthy Ate, slept and fought Dead bodies Lice Mud Rats (stole their food) Only got a break when new soldiers relieved them –but rested in trenches at the back of the front line

  10. Quote: Charles Yale Harrison “We are filthy. Our bodies are the colour of the earth, we have been living the past few months. We are alive with vermin and picking ourselves like baboons. It is months since we have been out of these clothes”

  11. Trench Foot • The weather and temp. controlled what would happen: • Summer: farmland turned to mud • Winter: Froze • Spring: Filled with water Months in these conditions led to Trench Foot • BRACE YOURSELVES

  12. How did it Happen • Foot constantly wet, begins to rot • Sores, cracks, bacteria • Leads to amputation • Solution: • Soldiers rubbed feet with oil/grease • Why? • Reading: p.25 of text.
