  1. Explication Explanation Poetry unit

  2. What is explication? Analysis of a poem Describes meaning Describes relationships between words, images and other parts of a poem Connects poem’s plot and conflicts with its structure

  3. Explic8 How to explicate a poem in 8 steps

  4. STEP 1 Read poem silently Then read it out loud (quietly) Then read it once more silently. * * * You don’t have to memorize a poem to write convincingly about it, but you should know it fairly well. * * *

  5. STEP 2 Decide what you think the poem is about. If you are mystified, write a paraphrase (line-by-line "translation"). Once you've made a general decision about the poem's meaning, write it down so that you can refer to it as you look at the details.

  6. STEP 3 Pay special attention to unusual words. Note what you think is the most important word in a line, couplet, or stanza. Connotation vs. Denotation

  7. STEP 4 Identify examples of poetic devices In the margins, make note of poetic devices you find Don't worry about explaining them quite yet. (Here refer to your list of terminology!)

  8. STEP 5 Mark lines which most directly speak about meaning These will probably be useful in supporting your thesis Place a different mark by lines that remain confusing Return to these last

  9. STEP 6 Draft paper by writing down your thesis from Step 2 Try to support your interpretation by explaining the lines you marked in Step 5 Be sure to mention not only what the lines mean, but also how the specific language helps make meaning (Steps 3 and 4)

  10. STEP 7 Return to the lines that confused you and decide how to make them fit what you think the poem means Be creative and don't be afraid of coming up with an outlandish idea.** If there’s no way to make these lines fit, consider changing the meaning you wrote in Step 2 ** you should still ground your interpretation in the language of the poem! Don’t be TOO outlandish!

  11. STEP 8 Begin your paper with your thesis. Support thesis with citation of lines and their meaning. Finally add how examples of poetic devices emphasize details and meaning of the poem.

  12. TIPS Use the language of the poem in your explication – quoting is a good way to substantiate your claim(s) Avoid using the verb “to be” or variations thereof. Other suggestions:

  13. ALL TOGETHER NOW… Dreams by Langston Hughes Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow.
