  2. Estar?—TO be • I am- YO ESTOY • You are- TÚ ESTÁS • He is, She is, You (f) are- Él ESTÁ, ELLA ESTÁ, UD. ESTÁ • We are- NOSOTROS ESTAMOS • They are- ELLOS ESTÁN, ELLAS ESTÁN, UDs. ESTÁN

  3. Estar • Estar means “to be” – in a temporary fashion. • Anything that can change will be “estar”. • Estar is used if something or someone is a certain CONDITION. • Use estar if you are talking about HOW something is…NOT WHAT something is.

  4. Clarify: • What is she like?
She is quiet.
Use ser:
Ella escallada. • How is she acting?
She is being quiet.
Use estar:
Ella estácallada.

  5. When to use Estar: • Estar is used to express four basic concepts: • 1. Location • 2. health • 3. changing mood or condition • 4. personal opinion (in terms of taste or appearance)

LOCAtion • Estar is used to describe where something or someone is physically located. • Yoestoy en la clase- I am in the class • Nosotrosestamos en el carro.- We are in the car • El restauranteestá en la ciudad.- The restaurant is in the city. • Ellasestán en el ba˜no.- They are in the bathroom. • ¿Estástú en el hospital? – Are you in the hospital?

  7. Estar is used to express geographic or physical locations. • ¿Dóndeestás?
Where are you? • Estoy en el laboratorio.
I'm in the laboratory. • ¿Dóndeestá Chile?
Where's Chile? • Chile está en América del Sur.
Chile is in South America. • Note: The one exception to this rule is that ser is used to tell where an event is taking place. (La fiesta es en mi casa.)

  8. Health • Use estar when talking about health: • Yoestoybien, gracias. – I am fine, thanks. • Ella estáenferma.- She is sick. • Los doctoresestánenfermos. – The doctors are sick. • ¿CómoestánUds?- How are you? • Estamosbien.- we are well/ fine.

  9. Changing mood or condition • Use estar: when your mood changes or the condition you are in changes. • La muchachaestácontenta. – The girl is happy. • Estoyfeliz. – I am happy. • Los hombres estáncansados.- The men are tired. • Estamosalegres.- we are happy. • ¿Estásenojado?- Are you angry? • Estamostristes.

  10. State or condition(HOW something is…) • Estar is used with adjectives to express a state or condition ("how" something is). • ¿Cómoestá la sopa?
How's the soup? • La sopaestáfría.
The soup is cold. • ¿Cómoestástú?
How are you? • Estoymuybien, gracias.
I am very well, thanks.

Personal opinionIn terms of taste or appearance • Use estar when talking about food/taste. • Use estar when talking about appearance/ look. • La comida estábuena.- The meal is (tastes) good. • El pescadoestádelicioso. –The fish is (tastes) delicious. • La sopaestásabrosa. – The soup is (tastes) delicious. • Ella estahermosa hoy.- She is (looks) pretty today. • Élestáguapo. – He is (looks) handsome.

Profession • Yo soy estudiante.- I am a student • Élesarquitecto- He is an architect. • Ella son maestrasexcelentes. – They are excellent teachers. • Somosdoctores.- We are doctors • Roberto esabogado. – Robert is a lawyer. • ¿Erestúingeniero?- Are you an engineer? • ***NOTE: Spanish not translate a/an when stating an unmodified profession. • Unmodified – José esestudiante. • Modified – José es un estudiantefantástico.

  19. Point of Origin • DE- here means from: • ¿De dóndees UD?- Where are you from? (sing) • ¿De dónde son Uds?- Where are you from (pl) • Yo soy de Orangeburg.- I am from OB • ¿De dóndeesella?- Where is she from? • Somos de Italia- We are from Italy. • Ellos son de los EstadosUnidos- They are from the United States. • El café es de Brazil.- The coffee is from Brazil. • La cervezaes de México.- The beer is from MX.

Identification • Specifies characteristics such as relationship, nationality, race, or religion. • Somos amigos- We are friends. • Lorika y Aliyah son amigas. – Lorika and Aliyah are friends. • Pablo esespa˜nol.- Pablo is Spanish. • ¿Erestú Americano?- Are you American • Ella escatólica. - Hse is Catholic.

  21. Material • DE : means OF here. • La mesa es de madera.- The table is of La bolsaes de plástico. – The bag is of plastic • Los zapatos son de cuero- The shoes are of leather. • Las ventanas son de vidrio.- The windows are made of glass.

  22. Possession or Ownership • De means OF here • La mu˜necaes de la ni˜na. – It’s the child’s doll.( The doll is of the child.) • Los amigos son de María.- They are Maria’s friends. (The friends are of Maria) • La idea es de Pedro.- The idea is pedro’s. (The idea is of Pedro.) • El barcoes del hombre rico.- The boat belongs to the rich man. ( the boat is of the rich man)
