  3. Period 1 • According to Durkheim, what kind of solidarity was there in old (primitive) times? Describe this type of solidarity and how it held people together. • Mechanical: Mechanical solidarity is the earliest kind of solidarity is called “mechanical” because solidarity happens automatically. It is solidarity based off of likeness, similarities, and a shared “collective conscious.” People all lived the same type of lifestyle, with similar practices, laws, technologies, and beliefs. • 2) According to discussion notes, Kamikaze pilots, the September 11th pilots and the patients who committed assisted suicide with Dr. Kevorkian because they had terminal illnesses or didn't want to be a burden to their families because of old age committed what type of suicide? Why would Durkheim believe this? • Altruistic: All of these people committed suicide for the benefit of others or for their community

  5. Period 1 3)Professor Swidler has taught us that the 1st thing to do when evaluating a theory is to find out the main question attempting to be explain. What is the main question that Weber is attempting to explain in his theory? What solution(s) does he propose to answer his main question? a. Main Question= When & under what circumstances will people form groups to pursue their interests in common (rather than competing only as individuals)On what basis do people form groups? b. People will form groups to pursue their interests around issues/ when there is a threat pertaining to their class, status, or party. 4)In the space below, briefly explain the idea of “dialectic” and label each corner of the triangle that Professor Swidler showed in lecture that explained Karl Marx’s “dialectical theory of history” a. The dialectic is an ideology expanded by Karl Marx that asserts that a point of view can generate its opposite. For example, the very existence of “good” , makes it possible to think of “not good” or bad. *b. The ideas and their opposites come into conflict and generate a new “synthesis”

  7. Period 2 1)Explain what "egoistic suicide" is, how it can come about, and example from society. a. Egoistic suicide is a type of suicide that can come about when someone has nothing to live for outside of their self. They have a low level of integration into society and no goals outside of their selves. b. Example: Sandy Hook Killer (little to no social connections) • 2) Davis and Moore ask a very “universal” question, why does inequality exists? What is an example of a “universal question, what is the problem with universal questions and what needs to be added to universal questions to make them actually possible to solve? • Example= Why is there an incest taboo? • Problem= Too general and not specific, Needs to have variables to test against. • Resolution= Make question more focused and add variables – “Why does an incest taboo exist in west coast of The United States and Not in Appalachia?”

  9. Period 2 • 3)According to Weber, around what 3 basis do people form groups? Explain these 3 basis and how they affect a person’s access to power and social mobility. • Class: when a group of people share common determinants of life chances in a market. Is an economic concept and deals with a group of peoples economic standing. • Status: the respect with which a person or status position is regarded by others. People in a status group share common sources of honor, compete with other groups for status, and find things to monopolize to maintain their privilege. • Party: the ability of people or groups to achieve their goals despite opposition for others. When groups of people have access to political power, they can influence laws and policies or their groups. “If you can influence the process of law creation, then you will be in a potentially powerful decision.”

  13. Period 3 • 1) In lecture, Prof. Swidler discussed the objective truth and the social truth and how one of them protects us from Anomic suicide. According to Durkheim, which truth (objective or social), that we live in, protects us from Anomic suicide and how does it protect us? • Social; social rules we live within tell us when we are accomplished, when we have achieved something, and set limits and boundaries for us. 2) In class, we have discussed how America is a very individualistic society and does not like a lot of interference from institutions. Discuss why our institutions seem “invisible” and are actually important to us and our society. - Our institutions seem invisible to us because they run so smoothly, that we take their benefits for granted. The fact that we can go to a market and buy things, or have legal recourse when we have been done wrong and give us protection are all the benefits of our institutions. - Institutions are so important because they help our roles within them help us define our moralities and they give us basic security and enforceable rights.

  15. Period 3 3) According to Davis & Moore sociologically theory, positions in society are rewarded unequally when skills are what 2 things? Give an example of this type of position (from lecture or discussion) and explain why Davis & Moore would think this position gets such high compensation compared to other positions. - Rewarded unequally when skills are valuable for society and scarce - Doctor: Davis & Moore would argue that doctors are rewarded so highly because their skill of being able to heal people is “valuable for society” and there is a relatively small amount of people who do this. 17. Period 4 • ) Define “totem” and “collective effervescence.” Give an example of a "totem" and a time where the "collective effervescence" surrounding that totem would be evoked. • Totem: representation of a clan or society • Collective Effervescence: shared experience & strong emotions connected with the special gathering of people. Brings people together • The totem would be the LA Lakers symbol, representing the society of LA Lakers fans. At a Laker game, the collective effervescence that is generated when Kobe scores a game winning shot fills the crowd with immense energy and draws them together. • Explain how our roles within institutions ground and define our moralities. Provide an example (from lecture or discussion) to illustrate your understanding. • According to Prof. Swidler, we derive our morals from our roles within institutions. For example, my morals such as cheating is wrong comes from my role as a student within the institution of schools

  19. Period 4 3) From our discussions & lecture, describe how Davis & Moore’s sociological theory leads to a “continuous model of inequality” in American society? - According to Davis & Moore’s theory, benefits and compensation are rewarded unequally when skills possessed are valuable and scare. This theory makes many assumptions and assumes people all have equal access to resources and an opportunity for embitterment. It does not examine other barriers people may face, and thus ignores the fact that it’s not just merit and individualism that gets one ahead, but other social connections and opportunities. 4) 4)In the space below, briefly explain the idea of “dialectic” and label each corner of the triangle that Professor Swidler showed in lecture that explained Karl Marx’s “dialectical theory of history” a. The dialectic is an ideology expanded by Karl Marx that asserts that a point of view can generate its opposite. 21. Period 5 1)Explain the "paradox of modernity" that Durkheim describes is happening in modernity? The paradox of modernity is the belief that the individual is sacred in modernity, but over individualism is underminining our sacred totems and collective conscious, telling us to focus on the individual. 2) Explain the 3 major assumptions/ problems with Davis and Moore’s sociologically theory explaining why social positions in society come with unequal rewards and benefits? - Are skills really maximized? – Not necessarily. D& M assume we have the best & brightest at these positions, but doesn’t examine barriers that may keep other bright people out. - What makes a skill valuable? – Value is very subjective. If a banker is payed a lot of money because is skill is valuable, but I don’t have a bank account, is it really valuable? - Are these skills really scarce? - Institutions set up barriers to keep their skill scarce. Like the profession of being a lawyer and the Bar exam.

  23. Period 5 3) According to Max Weber & lecture, what does it mean to be in the same class as someone else? (hint: we said that these 3 things are something you need to have in common to share a class). - To be in the same class as someone means you share common determinants of life chances in the samemarket. 4)In the space below, briefly explain the idea of “dialectic” and label each corner of the triangle that Professor Swidler showed in lecture that explained Karl Marx’s “dialectical theory of history” a.
