Senior Promotion Workshop Series We are also pleased to provide THREE VIDEOS of DFCM faculty addressing questions and providing advice on the process of becoming an Associate Professor or full Professor: • What has a senior promotion meant to you? • Do you have any advice for others in preparing for a senior promotion? • Who has assisted you in the senior promotion process?

Objectives of WORKSHOP #1 At the end of this session participants will have a general overview of: • Whatis a senior promotion in the Faculty of Medicine • What the criteriais to receive a senior promotion • Tounderstand each of the four main components for promotion • To identify your 5 scholarly pieces of work/publications • Identify the steps and timeline to apply for a senior promotion

  7. WHAT is a senior promotion? What is a Senior Promotion? Senior promotion refers to promotion to the academic ranks of Associate Professor and full Professor Academic promotion in the Faculty of Medicine recognizes the notable achievements of faculty members in their discipline and contributions to the University of Toronto.

  8. WHAT is a senior promotion Promotion is not granted as a reward for long-term service, but rather to recognize those who have excelled in specific aspects of the academic mission. The successful candidate for promotion will be expected to have established a wide reputation in his or her field of interest, to be deeply engaged in scholarly work, and to show him or herself to be an effective teacher.

  16. Criteria to receive a Senior Promotion Promotion is not granted as a reward for long-term service, but rather to recognize those who have excelled in specific aspects of the academic mission. The successful candidate for promotion will be expected to have established a wide reputation in his or her field of interest, to be deeply engaged in scholarly work, and to show him or herself to be an effective teacher.

  17. Criteria to receive a Senior Promotion The term “wide” reputation is typically interpreted as the achievement of: National recognition for promotion to Associate Professor International recognition for promotion to Full Professor

Criteria to receive a Senior Promotion According to the University of Toronto Policy and Procedures Governing Promotions, promotion is based on accomplishments in: • Research • Creative Professional Activity (CPA) • Teaching and Education • Administrative service to the University Candidates are asked to document achievements in each area.

  19. Criteria for a Senior Promotion • Research • Creative Professional Activity (CPA) • Teaching and Education • Administrative service to the University You need to demonstrate “excellence” in at least ONE area and “competence” in the other areas.

  21. Research – Criteria for Promotion The candidate should prepare a one to two page statement of research activities describing the importance and impact of the research. Criteria: • Record of sustained and current productivity in research and research-related activities. • Research advances will be communicated through the publication of papers, reviews, books and other scholarly works. • The quality of the scholarship in research will be judged in comparison to peers in the Faculty of Medicine and to others in the same field in peer institutions.

Research: continued Research Funding: • If seeking promotion on the basis of achievement in research, the candidate should have a strong and continuing record of external funding commensurate with the type and area of research Publications: • There must be a sustained record of scientific publications demonstrating that the research has lead to a significant source of new information in the field

Research: continued Scientific Presentations: • Presentations made at a national and international meetings will be considered • Invited presentations and named lectureships are a particular indicator of the individual’s reputation outside the university Participation, Leadership and Mentorship in the Research Community: • Examples of such activities include organization of international research meetings or symposia, leadership in research committees at national or international levels ….scientific advisory boards and councils…

  25. CPA – Criteria for Promotion The candidate should prepare a one to two page statement of CPA activities describing the importance and impact of the work. Criteria: The Faculty of Medicine recognizes CPA under the following three broad categories: • Professional Innovation and Creative Excellence • Contributions to the Development of Professional Practice • Exemplary Professional Practice Examples of CPA

CPA Category # 1 • Professional Innovation and Creative Excellence • May include the making or developing of an invention, development of new techniques, conceptual innovations or education program inside or outside of the University (e.g. continuing medical education or patient education) • To demonstrate professional innovation, the candidate must show an instrumental role in the development, introduction and dissemination of an invention, a new technique, a conceptual innovation or an education program

CPA Category #2 • Contributions to the Development of Professional Practice • Must demonstrate leadership in professional organizations, government or regulatory agencies that has influenced standards and/or enhanced the effectiveness of the discipline • Examples may include (but not limited to) guideline development, health policy development, government policy, community development, international health and development, consensus conference statements, regulatory committees and setting of standards

  28. CPA Category #3 3. Exemplary Professional Practice • Must show that his or her practice is recognized as exemplary by peers and has been emulated or otherwise had an impact on practice

A FEW Examples of CPA • Scholarly publications, books, chapters • Non peer-reviewed and lay publications • Invitations .. meetings, workshops, talks, interviews • Development of health policies • Presentations of regulatory bodies, governments, etc. • Dissemination of educational innovations • Evidence of leadership that has influenced standards • Creation of media, e.g., websites • Roles in professional organizations • Knowledge transfer Turn to page 16

  33. Teaching and Education The candidate should prepare a statement of their approach to teaching, including an assessment of the impact of teaching activities. Criteria: (can be one or all) • Teaching/Education Activity • Quality of teaching/education contribution • Educational innovation and development • Education Leadership • Education Scholarship

Teaching and Education In the Faculty of Medicine, teaching and education can encompass the following components: • Formal teaching • Curriculum and course development • Application of information technologies for education • Educational leadership and administration • Faculty development • Scholarship in education • Research in education • Assessment of learners

Excellence in Teaching and Education Candidates seeking promotion on the basis of excellence in teaching and education must demonstrate significant and high quality contributions to teaching and/or other education related activities in at least one of the following: • Sustained excellence in teaching • Participation in education and curriculum development • Contribution to the field of health professional education • Education leadership in faculty, department, division or hospital • External Waiver

  37. Administrative Service The candidate should prepare a brief outline of service activities. Use of bullet points is encouraged! • Administrative service in itself cannot be the main criteria for promotion • Significant service contributions may include (but not limited to): • Service to the Department, Faculty of Medicine, University: committee chair, lead coordinator of a special project, lead developer of faculty policies • Service to the professional, clinical or research discipline • Service to municipal, provincial or federal governments or non-government agencies

TIMELINE – IMPORTANT DATES Senior Promotion Timeline 2018-2019 IMPORTANT STEPS & DATES (handout) • Meet with your Chief/DFCM Division Director (before March 31) • Meet with Dr White (before March 31) • Attend the Workshops (Feb.13 & March 20) • Submit a pre-application (due April 9.2018)  • Attend Workshop #3 – only for candidates “supported” (May 29)

Workshop # 2 – Tuesday March 20.2018 • BRING YOUR CV • This workshop provides a more detailed look at identifying excellence or competence in each of four areas (research, CPA, teaching and education, administrative service) as well as identifying your five scholarly pieces of work • Time will be dedicated to talking with members of the Department Promotions Committee – you will sit at tables designated in an area of “excellence”, i.e., research, teaching & education, creative professional activity  • We will review Senior Promotion Pre-Application (review on our website)
